COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
ďTo kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.Ē According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and theyíre planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22ís. [Bottle] Clear golden-orange hue, modest head formation. Caramel malt aroma with hoppy pineapple juice and grapefruit citrus. Grapefruit dominates the palate, spiced hoppiness from start to finish, ending particulalry bitter. Grapefruit distinctive and long lingering in the aftertaste. Thereís an orange alcohol flavor mid palate too while the sugarry caramel malt backbone is light but present.

Huge passionfruit nose - I thought this must be galaxy hopped, not Nelson. Fairly straight forward DIPA body and texture wise, toffee, caramel and a bit helping of citrus and passionfruit. Very tropical. Unique and fun.

From the tap into a growler from downtown location: Poured a golden honey color with a tiny formation of foamy head which did leave behind a trace of lace. From the nose, there are is an assortment of hops giving a combination of citrus and sticky green hop. The flavor comes across well with a perfect balance between malt and hop while the hops tend to dominate a little more. Minor hints of lime citrus and ginger, however, this isnít a double IPA I would mention as a top contender of the category but meets the standard requirement I have.

The Sauvin tropical flavors and aromas are big and center. Yes grape and vine aromas too. Backed up solidly by a more standard west coast hop profile - citrus and pine, this is a solid brew. A bit too sweet but otherwise very good.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Super fresh bottle, got it as they were off-loading the truck at the liquor store.. Pours a translucent copper color with a big off white head that slowly fades and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. The aroma is light with mixed fruits, bubble gum and a bit of perfumy soap. The taste is vibrant with crisp hops, citrus, hazelnuts, white pepper and some caramel. The palate is full and smooth with lively carbonation. The finish is clean with a bit of hops and some sweetness lingering. Overall: This is an outstanding DIPA, I canít believe its a Karl Strauss. Compares favorably to Alpine Nelson.

Big thanks to turboedtwo for this bottle. Itís a gorgeous pour with a deep clear amber body with a steady stream of bubbles feeding a rocky off-white head that shows excellent retention and lacing. The aroma is a combination of citrus fruits, pine and white grapes. There is some sweet malty aromas and a hint of earthy spices as well. The taste has an even spicier character up front with some pine resin and the distinctive Nelson Sauvin chardonnay-type thing going on. The finish is sticky with pine resin hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sticky with moderate carbonation. I donít have much experience with this brewery but I really enjoy this one. Itís a great DIPA with a distinctive spicy character that makes it fairly unique.

On draft at OíBriens. Clear amber color with a small, creamy off-white head. Unexpectedly mild aroma, grainy malts with lightly floral and citrus hop notes. Flavor is hop dominant, more grainy malts with pine, citrus peel and a bitter earthy character that is somewhat unpleasant, leading to an astringent finish. medium to full body and tingly carbonation.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2008 Who knew that Karl Strauss would have a 9% IIPA. On tap a Hamiltons, and I see it starting to pop up elsewhere. Dark yellow color. Initial nice hoppy aroma, but then fades to a cooked corn vegetable or something. I can taste the corn/vegetable too. Not unpleasant, but not tasty or drinkable either. Possibly the worst IPA Iíve had. 5,2,6,3,11:2.7 Tried again at the brewery. 8,3,8,4,16:3.9

March 23, 2014 - via bottle at Karl Strauss Universal. Cloudy orangish yellow with large head that lasted and lacing. Aroma was piney and citrus hops. Taste was malty and fruity with a dry mildly bitter finish. Palate was medium to full and slight carbonation.
