COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Big thanks to turboedtwo for this bottle. It’s a gorgeous pour with a deep clear amber body with a steady stream of bubbles feeding a rocky off-white head that shows excellent retention and lacing. The aroma is a combination of citrus fruits, pine and white grapes. There is some sweet malty aromas and a hint of earthy spices as well. The taste has an even spicier character up front with some pine resin and the distinctive Nelson Sauvin chardonnay-type thing going on. The finish is sticky with pine resin hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sticky with moderate carbonation. I don’t have much experience with this brewery but I really enjoy this one. It’s a great DIPA with a distinctive spicy character that makes it fairly unique.

March 23, 2014 - via bottle at Karl Strauss Universal. Cloudy orangish yellow with large head that lasted and lacing. Aroma was piney and citrus hops. Taste was malty and fruity with a dry mildly bitter finish. Palate was medium to full and slight carbonation.

On draft at O’Briens. Clear amber color with a small, creamy off-white head. Unexpectedly mild aroma, grainy malts with lightly floral and citrus hop notes. Flavor is hop dominant, more grainy malts with pine, citrus peel and a bitter earthy character that is somewhat unpleasant, leading to an astringent finish. medium to full body and tingly carbonation.

This is among the sexiest beers I have had. It has the hallmarks of the archetypal Imperial IPA from the land that conceived this crazy, sexy beer. It looks good, as if it is a member of a Mormon family of singers with perfect teeth: perfect clarity, a lovely orange amber colour with a persistent head and good lace. Aromas of oranges, pink grapefruit, gooseberry and lime peel, testament to its New Zealand hops, grown less than twenty minutes away from where I am consuming it. The flavour is golden, spritzy and has grapefruit-like bitterness in spadefuls. It covers its abv very well to the extent that I could happily demolish another bottle if I had one handy. Gorgeous.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2008 Who knew that Karl Strauss would have a 9% IIPA. On tap a Hamiltons, and I see it starting to pop up elsewhere. Dark yellow color. Initial nice hoppy aroma, but then fades to a cooked corn vegetable or something. I can taste the corn/vegetable too. Not unpleasant, but not tasty or drinkable either. Possibly the worst IPA I’ve had. 5,2,6,3,11:2.7 Tried again at the brewery. 8,3,8,4,16:3.9

A pretty solid double IPA. The pour is amber orange with a finger and a half of yellowish head. Aroma of sweet tropical fruits and heavy hops. Banana, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, grass. The middle is sweet and fruity with a complementing maltiness. The finish is bitter and prolonged with a nice hop bite. Not a hop bomb, but very appetizing.

Appearance: Pours a clear orange amber with a retaining white 1/4 inch head. Aroma: Grapefruit, pineapple and pine. Taste: Bitter, citrusy and herbal hop flavor backed by sweet caramel like malts. Has a sage like after taste that I enjoy. Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Not thick or syrupy though. Overall: Another Rookie of the Year Candidate.

Bottle from brewery. Pours a nice orange with white head. Not really digging the nose--citrus and malts, lacking what I have tasted elsewhere recently, including in other KS beers. Solid, but stale seeming, though it was a fresh bottle.

Picked up this bottle while in San Diego. Pours copper with a white head. Nice strong hoppy aroma with lots of citrus. The 9% ABV is well hidden without being overly sweet. Great citrus flavor. Nice work.
