COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. 22 oz bottle. Clear amber/orange with a small off white head. Aroma of caramel, pine, citrus and bread. Flavor is lots of sweet caramel malt and a mellow bitterness. Medium body with mild carbonation and a soft, smooth mouth feel. Pretty good IPAx2 on the sweeter side.

22 oz bottle. Fuzzy peach brown with a white head. Nose is toffee, spiced apple cider, dough and mild pine. Juicy medium body, a touch syrupy and resiny, just enough carb to lighten. Taste is orange juice concetrate, grass, juniper and grapefruit peel. Too tilted toward the sweet side.

Bottle shared by argo0: Pours a clear deep golden bronze with a stringy-lacing white head. Has a fresh citrusy hoppy nose with a touch of light malty sweetness. Starts with pretty good fullness and a light toasty caramel sweetness with some good resiny hop notes before a crisp bittersweet finish. A true to style and drinkable IPA.

Nice fruity citrus hop nose, lots of pineapple, some peach, light honey. The taste is light to moderately sweet, lots of citrus, lots of cotton candy. Very nice.

[Bottle] Clear golden-orange hue, modest head formation. Caramel malt aroma with hoppy pineapple juice and grapefruit citrus. Grapefruit dominates the palate, spiced hoppiness from start to finish, ending particulalry bitter. Grapefruit distinctive and long lingering in the aftertaste. There’s an orange alcohol flavor mid palate too while the sugarry caramel malt backbone is light but present.

Draft. Amber beer with a cream colored head. Big summer/tropical fruit aroma. Tropical fruit and light vanilla flavor with light caramel. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Tropical fruit and light vanilla lingers with caramel.

Aroma contains citrus, vanilla, malts, caramel. Appearance is a dark gold with a cream colored foam top. Taste is incredibly creamy, big vanilla taste with nice hops and malts accompanying. There is a big caramel finish with a light bitterness. Overall, this is an interesting one. I like how thick and creamy it is with a light hop taste. Could use a little more balanced flavoring but besides that, it’s an enjoyable cold one. I’d give this a B rating.

New, on tap at the brewery in La Jolla. A fantastic double IPA that puts the others on tap to shame. Light color but busting with flavor. Plenty of hops and a citric taste that lingers forever. A delight.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2009 Rerate; much better, can’t understate that. This time from a bottle. A good balance in this one, with a good hop profile. Citrus, fruit and earthy. On tap at Carlsbad location. Color was a ruddy amber with a compact creamy head. Aroma was weird; wood chips, caramel, must and BO. Flavor was also pretty weird; and actually it was pretty terrible initially. It did get better, but really weak for the style.

Nice 1/2 inch ivory head tops a liquid tangerine body and leaves moderate spotty lacing on the inside of the glass. Aroma delivers traditional citrus and pine but is overly dominated by caramel malt. Similarly, too sweet for the style. Candied hops might be the best descriptor here. Wouldn’t pass on a glass but not the Southern California profile I look forward to.
