COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Pours hazy auburn with a thick white head. Dank hops with wood, wet leaves, and grapefruit in the nose. Sharp, biting herbal/peppery hop bitterness up front that rapidly shifts to a bitter grapefruit flavor. I was torn on this one; some sips were great, others were grainy and musty. Rating may not be as high as my 3.4, or it may be too low. The beer is too inconsistent to rate.

Pours an average cheddar orange with a nose of lightly malted grapefruit and organic pine. Flavor is bready grapefruit banana. Oily mouthfeel. Not bad.

A - pours golden orange with high fluffy white head. Some lacing. S - very malty nose. Sticky sweet caramel and doughy malts. Over ripe pineapple juice, blood orange, soap and pine notes as well. Definitely a malt heavy beer. M - medium body, very round creamy mf. High carb. Smooth on the palate, bitter and drier on the end. T - soapy and piny hops up front. Fruity, citrus notes, pineapple, pear, with a strong caramel and bready malts on the palate. Bitter hops, vegetal notes, lemon zest and tea bitters. O - why are so many "big" dipas just malt madness. Pretty well balanced up front, but the palate is over malty. Pretty good dipa. 3.4 ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

February 12th, 2012 - The draw with Karl Strauss’ Big Barrel Double IPA is the strange and exotic hops that the brewers brought to bear on this tall hop bomb. It’s a clear and bronze brew, like so many other hoppy beers, but a study of the carbonation is a little disquieting. Too few bubbles suggests a heavier, murkier palate and too little shielding from the wave of IBUs about to crash into my palate. The aroma is strikingly fruity and piney, with juicy touches of mango and, strangely, even some cacao nibs. The folks at Karl Strauss weren’t kidding when they said the addition of New Zealand hops would give the Big Barrel a tropical air. A lot of this South Pacific bliss disappears in the flavor, where the Big Barrel takes on a milder, slightly sweet yeasty and bread profile, more like a saffron roll than a drinkable hop cone. Still, that aroma is something I’ll remember for a long time to come, and a mild IPA is always welcome on my beer shelf.

Aromas of rose petals, caramel and alcohol, hint of toasted nuts. Appearance is copper/amber colored brew with thin head and semi clear color in the light. Taste is initially sweet from lots of malted barley, but not crazy the first of the taste is sweet brew and 3 seconds later the hops come to the rescue and even out the sip. Leaving a slight layer of spice and earthy hop on the tongue. Overall its not bad, well crafted and balanced but it needs a little something its overall sweet but nice to sip.

pours beautiful deep orange, with minimal head. Bitter hops on the nose, and a white grape like fruit note that’s very pleasant. Flavor brings bitter hops, with a nice fruity character. Passion fruit, tropical fruit and wine grape. Alcohol has almost no presence. A good DIPA

Bomber from Beverages4Less. Was looking forward to this one, having enjoyed a similar brew from KS. The pour was extremely inviting, a lustrous gleaming orange with a two-finger creamy head and abundant sticky retention. Aroma is fairly nice, with inviting sweetness a bit to the fore of the bitter, piney hop smell. Nice creamy mouthfeel. But the taste was a bit of a letdown, with bready malts dominating and some oxidation evident. Seems like this one’s past its prime.
