COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Specs: Color 15.4 SRM ALC 9.0% IBU 90 PLATO 20

New, on tap at the brewery in La Jolla. A fantastic double IPA that puts the others on tap to shame. Light color but busting with flavor. Plenty of hops and a citric taste that lingers forever. A delight.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2009 Rerate; much better, can’t understate that. This time from a bottle. A good balance in this one, with a good hop profile. Citrus, fruit and earthy. On tap at Carlsbad location. Color was a ruddy amber with a compact creamy head. Aroma was weird; wood chips, caramel, must and BO. Flavor was also pretty weird; and actually it was pretty terrible initially. It did get better, but really weak for the style.

Nice 1/2 inch ivory head tops a liquid tangerine body and leaves moderate spotty lacing on the inside of the glass. Aroma delivers traditional citrus and pine but is overly dominated by caramel malt. Similarly, too sweet for the style. Candied hops might be the best descriptor here. Wouldn’t pass on a glass but not the Southern California profile I look forward to.

Bottle… RBWG ‘10… Clear golden ale with a nice, creamy, white head. Excellent retention. The aroma is a mélange of earthy, piny, citrusy hops with just a kiss of butterscotch. Full-bodied and ultra creamy with soft carbonation. The flavor offers some nice, earthy bitterness, but overall, it’s way too sweet for a double IPA - even for me, the ultimate malt head. Tasty, though. Lengthy, sweet finish. Kudos to growler for popping the top on this one.

Bomber poured into pint glass. I recognize the aroma of the Nelson hops, but this is more pungent on the nose than other Nelson hopped beers I’ve had. Its really cloudy (where Alpine Nelson is perfectly clear) with a mandarin orange color. Malty taste and chewy texture. It is a decent beer but wont hold up to other exceptional Double IPA’s.

Pours a cloudy orange with small head that dissapates rather dast. Bit of lacing left. Smell of sweet malt, sugar, orange zest, and a bit of grapefruit. Smells super sweet. Bitter up front with a lemony pine finish. Some serious malt backbone and lots of sweet caramel malts. Very solid and on the malt side of the spectrum for the style. Makes for a relaxing Friday night.

On tap at the brewpub. Rather piney, but balanced by caramel malts and finishes with grapefruit bitterness. Good body and carb. Not stellar for the style, but good.

Pours hazy auburn with a thick white head. Dank hops with wood, wet leaves, and grapefruit in the nose. Sharp, biting herbal/peppery hop bitterness up front that rapidly shifts to a bitter grapefruit flavor. I was torn on this one; some sips were great, others were grainy and musty. Rating may not be as high as my 3.4, or it may be too low. The beer is too inconsistent to rate.

Bottle from Zinister.
Pours an average cheddar orange with a nose of lightly malted grapefruit and organic pine. Flavor is bready grapefruit banana. Oily mouthfeel. Not bad.
