COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. pours beautiful deep orange, with minimal head. Bitter hops on the nose, and a white grape like fruit note that’s very pleasant. Flavor brings bitter hops, with a nice fruity character. Passion fruit, tropical fruit and wine grape. Alcohol has almost no presence. A good DIPA

Bomber from Beverages4Less. Was looking forward to this one, having enjoyed a similar brew from KS. The pour was extremely inviting, a lustrous gleaming orange with a two-finger creamy head and abundant sticky retention. Aroma is fairly nice, with inviting sweetness a bit to the fore of the bitter, piney hop smell. Nice creamy mouthfeel. But the taste was a bit of a letdown, with bready malts dominating and some oxidation evident. Seems like this one’s past its prime.

A: The pour is a nice looking golden color with a bit of orange to it and a finger’s worth of white head. S: Quite a bit of sweet caramel maltiness with some slightly grassy and citrusy hops. A little maltier/sweeter than I like, but not too bad. T: The hops have really died out from the flavor. A bit of grass and citrus with only a mild pine on the finish. Quite sweet and malty, lots of caramel. M: The body is nice and a bit on the full side for an IPA. Moderately carbonated. D: As I noted in the aroma, this is a bit on the sweet side for my tastes. Still not bad, but I would prefer a bigger, more pungent hop character.

Bottle:   Golden hued amber, very faint haze, moderate to large foamy white head, fairly clingy lacing.   Soft grapefruit like aroma, a little bit of dank herbalness and muted candied citrus peel.   A little unfinished tho, seems like some medicinal/fusel like alcohol.   Yeah, almost a perfume like backend that is very distracting.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, not real heavy but at least its somewhat smooth.   Finishes with a hoppy semi-sweet perfumy alcohol like medicinal grapefruit.   Meh... not as good as I was hoping.   Thanks Ron for the bottle!
