COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. This smells like flowers with some fruit too. Okay. This is not as good as the regular IPA to me because it has too much fruit characters.

On draft at O’Briens. Clear amber color with a small, creamy off-white head. Unexpectedly mild aroma, grainy malts with lightly floral and citrus hop notes. Flavor is hop dominant, more grainy malts with pine, citrus peel and a bitter earthy character that is somewhat unpleasant, leading to an astringent finish. medium to full body and tingly carbonation.

On tap at Karl Strauss in Universal Studios LA. Pours a mostly clear, darker orange body with a two-finger width, fluffy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate amount of lacing. Aroma of woody earth and heavy citrus. More muted than the IPA, but the flavor is better. Sweet, slightly resiny, deeper earthy hops with a dry, piney finish. Lingers with a moderate sweet citrus. Overall, a standard DIPA with some nice balancing caramels.

Bottle from brewery. Pours a nice orange with white head. Not really digging the nose--citrus and malts, lacking what I have tasted elsewhere recently, including in other KS beers. Solid, but stale seeming, though it was a fresh bottle.

Sampled at RBWG 2010. The aroma and taste are earthy hop with plenty of malt in there... reminds me of old homebrew.

Bottle. Pours a golden body with a white head. Mothy citrus tones, oxidation very present, bitter soapy tones, a mild tea and pine bitterness. Probably great at one point but past prime.

Huge battle between grapefruit flavors (mostly) and reallly, reallllly off flavors. Hop abuse. This coming from the hop capital of the world (?) SoCal. Just funky, off, odd, hops. Rather hard to drink. Karl knows how to make great beer, but it looks like overusing hops alludes him.

this beer sucks. wow, big disappointment for a san diego DIPA. tastes more like a midwestern colorado-ish DIPA. ugh.

651mL thanks to Chris. Pours a clear orange, weak white head. Nose is mega cheese, sticky orange. Taste is sticky orange, butterscotch, heavy candy. Richer cheese and butterscotch toffee palate. But it isn’t for me.
