COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Bought this one at BevMo in simi valley. Pours a copper orange with about a finger worth of head. the aromas really take hold after the pour and the pinny citrus really calles you in. the aroma as you near is subtle and not over powering. hints of great fruit and citrus. starts off smooth and not harsh which is a plus . follows with a subtle hop resin bitterness. well balanced and a definite plus. cant beleive this is in the 9 percentile abv.

Bomber pours brilliant clear deep gold with off white head. The aroma is rich Simcoe goodness with resiny pine like notes, grapefruit and tangerine along with faint sweet malts and sugariness. The taste unveils resiny hop notes from the likes of grapefruit, tangelo, pineapple and thick pine like resininess running from front to back. This brew really only attains a sense of malty sweetness well underneath the yummy hoppy onslaught. I can drink a ton of this.

Bomber poured a hazy golden amber with a small lasting creamy ivory head. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, skunk bud, grapefruit, pine, tropical fruit, melon and light peach. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, grapefruit, skunk bud, pine, earthiness, light tropical fruit and a hint of melon with a smooth dry moderatly bitter lingering grapefruit finish. Very tasty indeed!

On tap @ Hamiltons. This is possibly the best smelling beer I have ever consumed. The hop nose is so profound, it’s almost addictive. Very nice beer, with lots of what I presume to be amarillo and Simcoe hops. Far and away, the best beer Karl Strauss has ever produced.

Appearance: Pours a clear orange amber with a retaining white 1/4 inch head. Aroma: Grapefruit, pineapple and pine. Taste: Bitter, citrusy and herbal hop flavor backed by sweet caramel like malts. Has a sage like after taste that I enjoy. Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Not thick or syrupy though. Overall: Another Rookie of the Year Candidate.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Super fresh bottle, got it as they were off-loading the truck at the liquor store.. Pours a translucent copper color with a big off white head that slowly fades and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. The aroma is light with mixed fruits, bubble gum and a bit of perfumy soap. The taste is vibrant with crisp hops, citrus, hazelnuts, white pepper and some caramel. The palate is full and smooth with lively carbonation. The finish is clean with a bit of hops and some sweetness lingering. Overall: This is an outstanding DIPA, I can’t believe its a Karl Strauss. Compares favorably to Alpine Nelson.

Bottle @ ks sv. Pours ruby amber with nice off colored white head. Nice smooth hop aroma with some earthy dank grassy notes but not too much. Good smooth body which hides the alcohol nicely. Keep brewing more agressive beers please. Rip Karl.

22oz bottle, no date from Hollingshead, $5.99. Clear amber orange with a two finger yellowish white head, creamy with good retention. Loads of caramel malt up front in the aroma with citrus, pineapple, and resiny pine hops competing for dominance, floral hops hiding behind. Flavor still has a hearty malt backbone, with the hops staying mostly the same until the finish, where they turn into mangoes and berries. Semi-dry finish with some lisght alcohol and bitterness peaking at a 4-5. Full-body with moderate soft carbonation. Pretty tasty non-West Coast DIPA from the West Coast.

Bottle from naven. A nice iipa. Tons of Nelson hops in the nose and on the tongue. Crisp finish. Nice offering from ls.

Pours a bright orange hue with a modest layer of frothy white head and super sticky lacing on the glass. Nose is amazing hop aromas, fresh pine and grass with grapefruit and sweet citrus tones. Flavor follows with high hop bitterness and piney-grassy-citrus hop flavors apparent from the onset, bready sweet malts provide appropriate balance, hints of tea leaves in the bitter drying finish. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. A great DIPA from a traditionally underwhelming brewery, I hope this is a sign of good things to come from another SD brewery, big hops and drinkability even at 9%, kudos for using NZ hops here....
