“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. This DIPA pours a clear copper color with a ton of bubbles floating up top. Fluffy white two finger heads. Good lacing throughout the glass. Now since Alpine Nelson is the only beer I can think about when I think about Nelson hops, you might hear me compare this beer to Nelson. Alpine Nelson was a much more balanced mix of a APA and an IPA. This beer is a full on DIPA. Alcohol is definitely noticeable and it’s a beer that is rough around the edges. Still a fantastic mixture hops, malt, and fruits. Mango, grapefruit, citrus, and grape undertones. There are other kinds of hops used this beer and you’ll pick those up to in the aroma and taste of pine. The backbone is primarily caramel malt. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and more on the heavy side of medium. It’s smooth and goes down really nice. There’s a very bitter aftertaste that just sits on your tongue.

Gigantic grapefruit aroma on this one. A gold orange color with a small white head. This is a hoppy damn beer. I got alot of grapefruit. Alot alot alot. Extremely bitter with a little bit of softer citrus backing like oranges or something, but mostly hops. Not alot of malts balance here. Lingering grapefruit and some alcohol on the palate. A little astringent.

On Tap Hamilton’s. Wonderful San Diego sunset orange color Light sweet tangerine and grapefruit nose. Brilliantly hopped with plenty of bite and a crystal clean finish. Deceptively drinkable for the ABV which is closer to 9% then the 8% listed

UPDATED: MAY 23, 2010 On tap @ Karl Strauss. Pours a mostly clear rust brown color with a fluffy beige head that left some great lacing. Tons of pine, citrus and resin on the nose. Big hoppy flavor with a good amount of sweet malt to add balance to the beer.

On tap @ Blue Foot Bar in North Park. Pours a medium amber with a ruby hue. Great lacing left on the glass. Nice grapefruit aroma and a nicely balanced finish. A pretty good one from the usually boring K.S.

Bomber - thanks riverside; pours a vibrant hazy orange with thick white head fading quickly; grassy hop aromas with some lemons, spicy hops, a little fruit; sticky, dry finish; lovely grassy notes with eathy malts; get some creamy caramel too; smooth, bitter, well rounded and damn tasty

Got to try this thanks to, "hannont". I must say, I was wary of anything from Karl Strauss as my only experience with their beers was their hideous amber lager which I paid $8.00 for in Disney’s California Adventure because I was desperate for a beer! I later found out I could get some decent craft beers or imports at Uva Bar in Downtown Disney (Whew!). Colour... amber-orange with a thick white head. Nose... sweetly hoppy and quite resinous. Palate... lightly cloying, with pineapple, stone fruits, candied citrus, grapefruit zest and a medium length finish

Bought this one at BevMo in simi valley. Pours a copper orange with about a finger worth of head. the aromas really take hold after the pour and the pinny citrus really calles you in. the aroma as you near is subtle and not over powering. hints of great fruit and citrus. starts off smooth and not harsh which is a plus . follows with a subtle hop resin bitterness. well balanced and a definite plus. cant beleive this is in the 9 percentile abv.

Bomber pours brilliant clear deep gold with off white head. The aroma is rich Simcoe goodness with resiny pine like notes, grapefruit and tangerine along with faint sweet malts and sugariness. The taste unveils resiny hop notes from the likes of grapefruit, tangelo, pineapple and thick pine like resininess running from front to back. This brew really only attains a sense of malty sweetness well underneath the yummy hoppy onslaught. I can drink a ton of this.
