COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
ďTo kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.Ē According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and theyíre planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22ís. On tap @ Hamiltons. This is possibly the best smelling beer I have ever consumed. The hop nose is so profound, itís almost addictive. Very nice beer, with lots of what I presume to be amarillo and Simcoe hops. Far and away, the best beer Karl Strauss has ever produced.

650 ml bottle from bev4less. Super fresh bottle, got it as they were off-loading the truck at the liquor store.. Pours a translucent copper color with a big off white head that slowly fades and leaves plenty of sticky lacing. The aroma is light with mixed fruits, bubble gum and a bit of perfumy soap. The taste is vibrant with crisp hops, citrus, hazelnuts, white pepper and some caramel. The palate is full and smooth with lively carbonation. The finish is clean with a bit of hops and some sweetness lingering. Overall: This is an outstanding DIPA, I canít believe its a Karl Strauss. Compares favorably to Alpine Nelson.

Pours a bright orange hue with a modest layer of frothy white head and super sticky lacing on the glass. Nose is amazing hop aromas, fresh pine and grass with grapefruit and sweet citrus tones. Flavor follows with high hop bitterness and piney-grassy-citrus hop flavors apparent from the onset, bready sweet malts provide appropriate balance, hints of tea leaves in the bitter drying finish. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. A great DIPA from a traditionally underwhelming brewery, I hope this is a sign of good things to come from another SD brewery, big hops and drinkability even at 9%, kudos for using NZ hops here....

Bottle from Beverages4Less in Santee.Pours copper with a huge frothy off-white head. Great floral aroma. Full bodied, almost, with rather mild carbonation. Flavor is floral hop and the malt is definitely in the minority. Itís not harshly bitter, but it is very bitter. The finish leaves nice hoppiness throughout the mouth. In the end it is very grapefruit rind.

22oz from riversideak. Chill hazed light orange golden with thin flabby off white head. Super orange citrus, pine and some dankiness...malt is super faint, which is nice. Really dig the amount of orange as it has the full orange...zest, pilth, flesh. Lightly carbonated with a thinner feel to it. Nicely balanced hop and malt flavors. The resinous citrus isnít as sweet as the nose may lead you to believe. The earthy pine and bittering shows well but doesnít over power. Alchohol well hidden. I would buy this often if it was available to me as I love the balance and the different hop aromas.

Bomber from Beverages 4 Less ($6.99). I had heard about this and saw the pretty good reviews here. I had to try it and see if Karl is finally ready to join its fine San Diego brethren and make some real beer. Pours a clear amber with two fingers of frothy white foam. The head has quite good retention and leaves some nice lacing. Nose is mellow and lightly sweet with citrus (tangerine, lime) and grass aromas. Flavor is initially more bitter than I would have thought considering the nose but it mellows out with a nice bit of sweetness near the end. Hop flavors abound (tropical fruits, pine) with a sufficient amount of malt to take the edge off. The 9% is well concealed. This brew really ups Karlís ante in terms of both ABV and IBU. It will be interesting to see if this starts an overall move for Karl toward bigger and better beers. (226, 48)

Picked up a bomber bottle at Spirits of St. Germain in La Jolla, California. Pours a clear, warm amber color with a small, off-white head. It has a really nice aroma that is full of citrus notes (most notably orange), with hints of alcohol peeking through. Thereís a subtle, light bitterness in the taste which complements the big, caramel malt flavors. Medium bodied; coats the inside of your mouth, and leads to a fairly long, resinous finish and aftertaste that have lots of herbal and fruit (apple?) notes. Overall, itís a really interesting and tasty beer. Definitely the best Karl Strauss beer Iíve had yet; I donít typically find their beers to be particularly great, so this is a welcome addition to the lineup.

Thanks to IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours hazy orange gold with a white head. Nose is orange creamsicle- malt, caramel, orange, tangerine, vanilla, and apricot with kumquat. Flavor is similar with lots of creamsicle and citrus mixed with vanilla. This medium-bodied IPA finishes with lingering citrus and tangerine hops.
