3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very hazy, chewy looking, orange coloured body with a light copper glow and a dense, thick tan head. Aroma of potent citrus and piney hops with some honey and perfume in the mix as well - nice and balanced and STRONG. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep fragrant and complex floral and perfumey hop presence which draws you in to deal with the good malt backbone and the lingering sweetness and almost fruity character. Aftertaste shows more of the hops than anything else, but when they are this complex and strong, itís nice. The alcohol is a bit present on the end, with some lingering potency, but not overly so, especially for this style. Overall, a good imperial ipa, bordering on a normal IPA, but still a bit high in alcohol and in palate with the malt especially. Worth trying it if you can find it, especially if you like Nelson hops! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Olive Tree Market in San Diego, California on 08-February-2011 for US$5.79 sampled at home in Washington on 18-February-2011.

The Nelson Sauvin hop was really interesting in the Mikkeller single hop, and it is masterfully used here. First comes the "white wine" taste (and the aromas are lovely grapes) and a good one at that, then in the finish, other hops put the beer into 90 IBU territory, so hops in your face. Nebver harsh, this was an absolute delight and worth seeking out. Above average mouthfeel, a great smooth drinker.
Kudos to my southern neighbour that sent this one.

From the tap into a growler from downtown location: Poured a golden honey color with a tiny formation of foamy head which did leave behind a trace of lace. From the nose, there are is an assortment of hops giving a combination of citrus and sticky green hop. The flavor comes across well with a perfect balance between malt and hop while the hops tend to dominate a little more. Minor hints of lime citrus and ginger, however, this isnít a double IPA I would mention as a top contender of the category but meets the standard requirement I have.

I really like the Nelson Sauvin hop. The grape taste is great. It works so weel with the hop bitterness. This is more of a regular IPA than a double.

Poured a hazed amber with no head.
Nose is big on citrus and pine hops. Very pungent.
Taste is slightly harsh bitterness, moderate hop flavor, nice medium light body showcases the hops rather than worrying about balancing them. Without question the best Strauss beer iíve had.

The Sauvin tropical flavors and aromas are big and center. Yes grape and vine aromas too. Backed up solidly by a more standard west coast hop profile - citrus and pine, this is a solid brew. A bit too sweet but otherwise very good.

An amber IPA with a thin white head. In aroma, nice pungeant c-hops with loads of tropical fruits, menthol, alcohol warmth. In mouth, a good intense double IPA with loads of malts, herbal hops, meaty notes, pink grapefruits. Intense and rich. On tap at Ballast Point 13 Anniv. Beer Festival , Oct. 24 2009.

Big thanks to turboedtwo for this bottle.
Itís a gorgeous pour with a deep clear amber body with a steady stream of bubbles feeding a rocky off-white head that shows excellent retention and lacing.
The aroma is a combination of citrus fruits, pine and white grapes. There is some sweet malty aromas and a hint of earthy spices as well.
The taste has an even spicier character up front with some pine resin and the distinctive Nelson Sauvin chardonnay-type thing going on. The finish is sticky with pine resin hops.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and sticky with moderate carbonation.
I donít have much experience with this brewery but I really enjoy this one. Itís a great DIPA with a distinctive spicy character that makes it fairly unique.
