COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“To kick off this series of intense hoppy beers, we wanted to go big. Imported New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops provide a vibrant tropical aroma that raises eyebrows and expectations. Aggressive amounts of Warrior and Ahtanum hops produce an assertive bitterness that stands out against a firm malt backbone. Balanced even at 90 IBUs, Big Barrel leaves a considerable first impression that serves as a prelude of things to come.” According to a brewery rep, the beer will be distributed throughout Southern California and they’re planning on doing 1,000 cases of 22’s. Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Color was honey orange. About a finger width of head. Dusty white lacing on the top with some bubbles in the middle. Sporadic film on the sides, but not as much as I thought there would be. Smelled huge hops right in the beginning. Citrus hops as expected with grapefruit seeming to be the leader. Also tangerine in there, too. Tasted a bit stronger on the alcohol side than I expected. Tons of citrus hops. Seemed to be more tangerine than grapefruit, but it was tough to tell. Bitter on the tongue after. Medium body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Bitter abrupt finish. I had high hopes for this beer, but it didn’t quite live up to my billing. I’d probably try it again though.

Definitely the best thing I’ve had from these guys. Big floral piney nose with pale malt in the background. The hops hit the tongue on initial sip. Full bodied, moderately dry, nice malt backbone. Well balanced. A fair amount of tropical fruit. Very nice IIPA.

Pours a dark orange with an off white head and hops and citrus. Taste is bittersweet, of hops, big citrus notes with a massive, long bittersweet finish. Very good IPA

Pours a shade darker than a classic golden color. The liquid is crystal clear. An eggshell colored, fat, clumpy head forms quickly. Butterscotch, lemon esters, and somewhat earthy bouquet. Mouthfeel is full, cottony, slick, and maybe a bit oily. Some mild butterscotch (not diacetyl) and some sweeter citrus esters in the flavor. The alcohol appears by itself after the finish, which tends to taint the experience a bit.

UPDATED: NOV 2, 2013 22oz. Bottle. Golden amber, with nice big fluffy head, which hangs on to the sides. Malty nose mixed with fruity hops. Big flavors of sweet malts with fruits like mango and pineapple. Hop flavors along with well balanced bitterness. Some burn in the finish. Usually I don’t like my Imp IPAs too malty, but there is almost enough hop to counter this.

Sweet caramel aroma. Pours clear amber with a thick white head. Well balanced flavor, finishes very sweet and long with a hint of sourness.

Costa Mesa Karl Strauss place: happy hour on-tap $4.00 pint on 9th July 2014. Light amber pour with a thin white wisp for a head. Bitter and hoppy from the start, I really enjoyed it. The hop combination works well and what malt content there is prevents the bitterness getting completely out of hand. Very drinkable.
