COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When checkered blackball flags dot the California coastline, experienced surfers migrate to advanced breaks where strangers to the sport dare not. Blackball is a Belgian-inspired India Pale Ale with a robust West Coast hop profile. Belgian ale yeast, coriander, and Curacao lend a fruity and spicy character for an ale bolder than your average IPA. A blend of New Zealand and Cascade hops add a vibrant floral aroma and clean citrus hop bitterness that lingers through its crisp, dry finish. Drink up while it’s young, heavily hopped IPA’s are best enjoyed fresh.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, and a bit of hay. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, malt, dusty hops, and a bit of caramel, leading to a dry, dusty, and alcoholic finish.

Bottle, 65 cl, at Papsø. Cloudy orange with a white foamy, quickly diminishing head. Sweet, yeasty, orange-peelish aroma. Floral and light malty notes. Sweet with a hefty bitter finish, yeasty, phenols, orangey, spicey. Complex, yet easy drinkable.

22oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Deep amber pour with a good amount of off-white head. Aromas of candi sugar, bready malt, and Belgian yeast. Flavor has some rye spice with citrus and spicy Belgian yeast.

Aroma’s of vanilla roasty caramel malts and subtle piney hops. Color is a medium gold with a medium sized foam top. Taste is fruity and malty with light carbonation to it. Pleasant but short presence of doughy and malty taste on the finish. Overall, this is refreshing and tasty but, not as hoppy as I had expected. Very flavorful beer with lots of vanilla, caramel, fruits and citrus on the flavor. I’d give this a B- rating.

(22oz bomber thanks to bu11zeye) clear amber with fine eggshell colored bubbles. Nose of candied citrus, sweet bread, and rye. Taste of rye, Belgian spicy yeast, lightly fruity, and a spicy linger.

Bomber from BevMo. Hazy light amber in color. Mostly orange with some redness. Sweet yeasty aroma. The Belgian qualities dominate the nose. Decent, lasting foamy head. Smooth up front. Sweet with a bitter finish. Fairly spicy hoppiness. Enjoyable.

Sampled on 7/23/2011. This Double IPA pours a dark orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is fruity, sweet, yeasty and hoppy. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity, sweet, orange and apricot. The hops are herbal and citrusy. Fruity and sweet then bittering at the finish. With a name like Black Ball I was expecting a Black IPA. Hint of orange peel and coriander, maybe some pepper as well. Hides the alcohol well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Bomber from Albertsons in San Diego. Spicy, peppery and earthy aroma. Clear yellowish orange with an initially foamy white head that dies down quickly. More spice and peppercorn flavors along with a nice bitter hop bite. Hops are citrusy with a bit of pith on the edges that sticks to the tongue. The Belgian yeast influence is noticeable but not overpowering. Some sweetness and a nice peach flavor in there to balance the spice and bitter, but those ultimately win out. A very interesting, tasty and drinkable IPA.
