When checkered blackball flags dot the California coastline, experienced surfers migrate to advanced breaks where strangers to the sport dare not. Blackball is a Belgian-inspired India Pale Ale with a robust West Coast hop profile. Belgian ale yeast, coriander, and Curacao lend a fruity and spicy character for an ale bolder than your average IPA. A blend of New Zealand and Cascade hops add a vibrant floral aroma and clean citrus hop bitterness that lingers through its crisp, dry finish. Drink up while itís young, heavily hopped IPAís are best enjoyed fresh.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. Amber with a white head. Aroma is Belgian yeast with some grassy notes. Flavor is classic Belgian IPA. I get some nice yeast notes as well as some pine and grass. There is also some brown sugar sweetness. Low bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Sampled on 7/23/2011. This Double IPA pours a dark orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is fruity, sweet, yeasty and hoppy. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity, sweet, orange and apricot. The hops are herbal and citrusy. Fruity and sweet then bittering at the finish. With a name like Black Ball I was expecting a Black IPA. Hint of orange peel and coriander, maybe some pepper as well. Hides the alcohol well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

650ml bottle. Barely clear, orangey, deep goldn colour with average to huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Floral, yeasty aroma, sweet-ish fruity background, notes of yellow berries, yellow stone fruit, a toch of orange zest, cautious spicy yeasty overtones. Taste has a minimally sweet caramel malty basis, some fruitiness, a touch of peach, hints of honey biscuits, a strand of peppery yeast spiciness is constantly and clearly present; super soft palate. Nice yeasty character, quite weak on the hop side.

22 ounce thanks to JohnCoctosin. This is a very refreshing and nicely done take on the mix of IPA and Belgian. Most of the taste - the banana, yeasty taste -comes from the yeast. But it works well. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Orange hazy. Fruity nose. Oranges, belgy blond estery vibes, golden honey light corn malty. Some straw, hay. Mouthfilling body, lots of Orange, slight marmelady, sweets, finishes clean though. Quite soft, lots of round bitters, some pine in the finish. IPA (even a belgian one) isnít the first thing that comes to mind with this drink. Rather imperial belgy blondy, but with a clean nice non-oily texture. Qutie enjoyable. Canít bother look for a BBE, but Iím sure this is a bit old already, the IPAish hoppy notes that might have supposed to have been there have, if ever present, surely mallowed out some time ago.
