3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark black with a tan head with spotty lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, pine resin, some coffee, and some rye spicyness. Flavor is roasted malts, coffee, pine, citrus hops, bittersweet chocolate, and peppery rye notes. has a medium full body with a creamy, somewhat oily moutfheel, and dry bitter, somewhat sour finnish from the rye. overall, a very nice beer that shows off the continuing improvement of Karl Strauss.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber. Pours rich dark black with a good two fingers of tan foam. No real rye presence in the nose, mostly dark toasty malt and bitter coffee notes. Taste is a pleasant surprise up front, as a rye-filled malt assault hits the tongue, with a touch of bitter black coffee rises up and then gives way to an almost tart rye finish. Solid body, nice mouthfeel, oily and slick, and pleasant lasting finish. Booze is present but well integrated. Good brew.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very dark brown with a garnet color under a strong light and a long lasting tan head. Roasted malt and cocoa aromas with an earthy quality. Very spicy and dry on the palate which is a great expression of the rye. The dryness is cut by a smooth bittersweet chocolate and cocoa flavors and some grassy/herbal notes. Slightly creamy and not heavy at all with a sweeter milk chocolate flavor towards the end. Leaves a dry, coffee like flavor behind. This is a really nice black IPA with the added bonus of rye in the mix.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: AUG 17, 2011 Growler to go from KS Sorrento Mesa: Pure black pour with a medium tan head. Aroma is burnt toast with a hint of chocolate. Flavor starts with a sharp walnut like bitterness followed by grapefruit bitter hops and a hint of bakers chocolate with a long dry bitter roasty finish. Medium body has moderate carbonation.

Thanks to a generous soul for sending this bottle my way. Served in a tulip.
Pours near black with a good off-white head that sticks around for a bit. Very thin cap and a good-sized collar hang around throughout. Lots of spotty lacing. The nose brings some earthy and piney hops along with a good dosing of roast and some slight chocolate character. The flavor doesnít have quite as much hop character, but thereís a nice bitterness to round everything out. Thereís a touch of rye, though Iím not sure I could have picked it out had I not known it was there. Medium body with good carbonation. Roasty bitterness through the finish. Solid brew.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Pours pretty damn black with a 5 finger creamy tan head. It is beautiful. Aromas of chocolate and maybe resin hop. Whoa! The first hit is resin, quickly followed by chocolate, and a harsh malt that has got to be rye. Meanwhile the head has laced all to heck. On into the finish it has some of that harsh NW IPA aspect, and a lot of roasty toasty near-burnt malt. My mouth just wraps around this baby. Brilliant beyond expectation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
bottle-pours almost black with a soapy kacki head that lasted a long time cold but not very long warm. seems somewhat backwards. nose is of piney hops, char, smoke, lite chocolate with some herbal character. flavors are very chary with alot of pine and herbal hop notes. very well balanced but leaves a bigtime char finish. could be the least metallic Black IPA i have had to date. the malt has enough sweetness to overide the metalllic flavors. some alcohol detected long into the finish. somewhat warming. a very tasty example of this style!

UPDATED: JUL 2, 2011 Taster at Bev4less. Black pour with a medium tan head that had good retention. The aroma is sharp with chocolates and some burnt toast. The flavor is more of the same, lost of roasted malts, biter walnuts, spicy breads and burnt toast. The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long and biter. Overall: Very tasty.
