Pours a dark black with a tan head with spotty lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, pine resin, some coffee, and some rye spicyness. Flavor is roasted malts, coffee, pine, citrus hops, bittersweet chocolate, and peppery rye notes. has a medium full body with a creamy, somewhat oily moutfheel, and dry bitter, somewhat sour finnish from the rye. overall, a very nice beer that shows off the continuing improvement of Karl Strauss.

Great mouthfeel and bitter rye flavor, and love the spice, but it needs a lil more hoppy finish. Opens up after resting -- nice chocolate coffee notes.

Cask night at Karl Strauss. Smooth flavor with, pine, toasted malt, and a touch of grapefruit. This is the kind of beer that made me decide I like some IPAs.

22oz bottle. Pours completely opaque black with small foamy brown head. Aroma is piney hops with chocolate. Earthy hops up front followed by unsweetened cocoa and finishes sticky and smooth with an almost stout-like chocolatyness. Very slight lingering bitterness makes this quite an impressive little drink. I’ve generally not been a fan of KS, and this might be the first KS brew I’ve sincerely enjoyed, so I hope they are stepping up their game!
