COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When the sun goes down past Crystal Pier, the postcard view of the Pacific fades into the dark. As the tourists head off down the Boardwalk, a distinctly local vibe returns to PB. Boardwalk Black Rye IPA is a spicy black ale with a hop profile thats pure West Coast. Black and caramelized rye malts add complex spicy and roasted notes, while three massive additions of Ahtanum hops provide the vibrant floral aroma and citrus hop character of a Double IPA. Keep Boardwalk out of the cellar, this hoppy offering is best enjoyed fresh.

Bomber purchased at BevMo in Escondido ($5.99). Pours very dark brown with a bit of reddish highlight and three fingers of dark tan foam. Aroma has major pine forest off the bat followed by citrus, dark roasted malts, smoky chocolate, and moderate coffee. Flavor starts off hoppy with citrus and pine notes but is soon overtaken by the black part of "Black IPA" with notes of cocoa powder, roasted nuts, spicy rye, dark chocolate, and some earthy coffee. Creamy mouthfeel with well-concealed ABV. Good one for the style and quite a nice price. (31, 698)

Pours a dark black with a tan head with spotty lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, pine resin, some coffee, and some rye spicyness. Flavor is roasted malts, coffee, pine, citrus hops, bittersweet chocolate, and peppery rye notes. has a medium full body with a creamy, somewhat oily moutfheel, and dry bitter, somewhat sour finnish from the rye. overall, a very nice beer that shows off the continuing improvement of Karl Strauss.

On tap @ Karl Strauss Brewing. First, id like to note that i find Karl Strauss beers usually lacking in quality but, this is phenomonal! Aroma is unique, soft caramel, bread and molasses. Color is straight black. Taste is very complex with some flavors of nuts, dough, oats, molasses and bittering hops. Very bitter with strong malts. Overall, this is fantastic! slightly thick with complex flavors. My new favorite from Karl Strauss. A+ rating.

Poured from the bomber. Aroma is mild. The malt character is not overpowering. The rye is present, but the hops are mild, perhaps almost pale ale ish. Finishes thick and oily. Very good black ipa with the rye twist.

Very dark brown with a garnet color under a strong light and a long lasting tan head. Roasted malt and cocoa aromas with an earthy quality. Very spicy and dry on the palate which is a great expression of the rye. The dryness is cut by a smooth bittersweet chocolate and cocoa flavors and some grassy/herbal notes. Slightly creamy and not heavy at all with a sweeter milk chocolate flavor towards the end. Leaves a dry, coffee like flavor behind. This is a really nice black IPA with the added bonus of rye in the mix.

Pours black with 2 finger frothy light brown head. Nose- chocolate and roasted malts, coffee, rye and resin. Medium to heavier bodied with flavors of earth and roast, chocolate malts, biscuits, some herbal and resin hops subtly making an appearance. Spicy nuanced finish. Pretty good though not elite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber poured into glass- huge aroma that reminds me nearly of a smoked porter, that burnt smokey aspect. Dark brown nearly black beer, more carbonation on it than my previous rated beer the Off The Rails. Taste is good with some bitter chocolate along with a nice full body. Much better beer than the previous Karl Strauss beer I was drinking.

Pours black with a thick light-tan head. Aroma is RYE, spicy, brown sugar, some fruit and chocolate. Taste is rye, dry, sweetness, grapes, creamy, coffee finish. Medium carbonation. Nice, creamy mouth feel.

Bomber. Pours rich dark black with a good two fingers of tan foam. No real rye presence in the nose, mostly dark toasty malt and bitter coffee notes. Taste is a pleasant surprise up front, as a rye-filled malt assault hits the tongue, with a touch of bitter black coffee rises up and then gives way to an almost tart rye finish. Solid body, nice mouthfeel, oily and slick, and pleasant lasting finish. Booze is present but well integrated. Good brew.
