When the sun goes down past Crystal Pier, the postcard view of the Pacific fades into the dark. As the tourists head off down the Boardwalk, a distinctly local vibe returns to PB. Boardwalk Black Rye IPA is a spicy black ale with a hop profile that’s pure West Coast. Black and caramelized rye malts add complex spicy and roasted notes, while three massive additions of Ahtanum hops provide the vibrant floral aroma and citrus hop character of a Double IPA. Keep Boardwalk out of the cellar, this hoppy offering is best enjoyed fresh.

UPDATED: AUG 17, 2011 Growler to go from KS Sorrento Mesa: Pure black pour with a medium tan head. Aroma is burnt toast with a hint of chocolate. Flavor starts with a sharp walnut like bitterness followed by grapefruit bitter hops and a hint of bakers chocolate with a long dry bitter roasty finish. Medium body has moderate carbonation.

KS got the chops - this is pretty darn good. Good chocolate malt body, a hint of rye with some pretty big PNW hops. All tied together pretty well. Not overtly flash, but lean, mean and hop green.

Pours black with 2 finger frothy light brown head. Nose- chocolate and roasted malts, coffee, rye and resin. Medium to heavier bodied with flavors of earth and roast, chocolate malts, biscuits, some herbal and resin hops subtly making an appearance. Spicy nuanced finish. Pretty good though not elite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black in color with a tan head. A bit of rye on the nose, nice roast, pine, and some citrus hops. Grapefruit, orange peel, coffee, and maybe some chocolate. There’s a moderate citrus quality, some pine, floral hops, and lots of roast. Coffee, chocolate, and mild caramel sweetness. Decent bitterness on the finish.

"No idea of the age, but new to me :) Bomber. Poured inky black and pretty thick head. Great feel, smooth. Almost stoutlike at first, like a bitter imperial stout, but became very well balanced as it warmed and opened up. Pine, spicy rye, and citrus, chocolate, roast, and a bittersweet aftertaste. Leaning towrds the darker malt over the hops, but just ever so slightly. Nice brew."
