COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When the sun goes down past Crystal Pier, the postcard view of the Pacific fades into the dark. As the tourists head off down the Boardwalk, a distinctly local vibe returns to PB. Boardwalk Black Rye IPA is a spicy black ale with a hop profile thatís pure West Coast. Black and caramelized rye malts add complex spicy and roasted notes, while three massive additions of Ahtanum hops provide the vibrant floral aroma and citrus hop character of a Double IPA. Keep Boardwalk out of the cellar, this hoppy offering is best enjoyed fresh.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a dark tan head. Dark malt and light grapefruit aroma. Grapefruit and light roast flavor with light chocolate. Medium bodied. Grapefruit and light pine lingers with light cocoa and light roast.

Draft: Itís good but undefined, Iíd rather drink a brown ale or an IPA, but not both. Time to work on a differente style, IPA & DIPA are being destroyed. Food Pairing: Fish and Chips + Cheese platter.

This beer has a deep dark look. It has a bitter sharp flavor. It is somewhat flavorful but a little too strong. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I had this on draft at Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa. At first it tasted a bit thin and watery, but as I got further along a nicely balanced roasty, hoppy beer showed up.

Black forest body topped with a perfect, browned, hop-pocked, cream head. Spicy and prickly nose - probably a combination of PNW hopping and assertive rye. Rough black malt notes. Acrid ash notes with definite bitterness. Dry, bitter, and charry finish. The hop bitterness grows more distinct with each sip.

Bottle. Pours with a near black with a large and thick brown head that has pretty decent staying power and good retention. Aromas of fruit. Strong citrus, orange and grapefruit with a considerable amount of esters. Light roast, coffee, some spice and a bit of a metal character as well. Tobacco, chocolate, light dark fruit. Flavors are quite roasty, toasty and spicy. Roast dominates and finishes a bit nutty, dry and acrid. Thin, dry. Spicy. Moderate hop flavors of pine and citrus (somewhat unpleasant, but I donít particularly care for Ahtanum hops, which I think this uses). Roast, lightly astringent, lasting bitterness. Thin, warming, medium bubbles. The roast and even somewhat astringent malt character dominates the hop character (that said, I am picky on which Black IPAs I like).

Decent black ipa. HEavy on the malt bitterness rather than the hops which is nice but it didnít have a full round flavor.
