3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 gorditoabd (489) - San Diego, USA - AUG 15, 2011
Bomber. Pours rich dark black with a good two fingers of tan foam. No real rye presence in the nose, mostly dark toasty malt and bitter coffee notes. Taste is a pleasant surprise up front, as a rye-filled malt assault hits the tongue, with a touch of bitter black coffee rises up and then gives way to an almost tart rye finish. Solid body, nice mouthfeel, oily and slick, and pleasant lasting finish. Booze is present but well integrated. Good brew.

Bomber from Hayduke. We shared it via facebook chat. This was very dark and had a tan head that settled with big bubbles bursting. The aroma was chocolate, anise, roasted notes, and swamp. The flavor began with chocolate and licorice but there was so much going on and so many layers to the flavor. Quite late I was finally able to taste hops and they were citrus and grassy. This beer kept changing personalities and was a blast to taste. I knew there were hops in there but had to peel back layers of other interesting flavors before they were exposed. As well as interesting this beer was also quite tasty. What fun to try. Fortunately I had a bomber and not just a few ounces because the complexity required some time to explore.

Bomber purchased at BevMo in Escondido ($5.99). Pours very dark brown with a bit of reddish highlight and three fingers of dark tan foam. Aroma has major pine forest off the bat followed by citrus, dark roasted malts, smoky chocolate, and moderate coffee. Flavor starts off hoppy with citrus and pine notes but is soon overtaken by the black part of "Black IPA" with notes of cocoa powder, roasted nuts, spicy rye, dark chocolate, and some earthy coffee. Creamy mouthfeel with well-concealed ABV. Good one for the style and quite a nice price. (31, 698)

diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, leafy
hops, chocolate, some coffee and a hint of spice. Flavour of roasted malt, light spice, coffee, leafy hops and chocolate. Alcohol well hidden. Medium bodied, almost-creamy mouthfeel. Quite good, I enjoyed it.

I had this on draft at Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa. At first it tasted a bit thin and watery, but as I got further along a nicely balanced roasty, hoppy beer showed up.

Cask night at Karl Strauss. Smooth flavor with, pine, toasted malt, and a touch of grapefruit. This is the kind of beer that made me decide I like some IPAs.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (4985) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - FEB 1, 2012
Bomber pours deep darkness with full tan head and some sheet lacing. The aroma is big and yummy with dark roasted malts, earthy and spicy hops, some dark roasted coffee, malt balls and some rye twanginess. Great aroma. The taste feels thin but some how also on the creamy side. I get dark roasted malts fused with almost, but not quite, chewy rye spicy twanginess. Midway and into the finish a touch of toffee and burnt malts come to the surface to play with a bit of resiny pine hops.
