COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Don’t upset these angry birds: share a bottle of this year’s Holiday Tripel. Four Scowling Owls – the next release from our “Twelve Days” holiday series – is a robust Belgian style strong ale with orange citrus flavors and a spicy aroma. Amarillo and Mount Rainier hops balance out the Vienna malt character. The finish is dry and warm, perfect for those “chilly” San Diego winters. Birds of a feather drink together.

22oz bottle on 9th July 2014 in the Costa Mesa Karl Strauss brewpub. Lovely sweet feel to this old gold coloured beer. Highly carbonated with caramel and toffee flavours throughout. The hops play their part, a mild citrus note is evident in both the nose and taste, but the malty molasses rule this brew. Paid $14:00 for the bottle and pleased I splashed out, even if it was happy hour and tap pints were only $4:00 each at the time.

On tap at flaming grill for beer week! Nice lacing. Very clear straw colour. Aroma is spicy and citrusy. Flavor also has the typical Belgium type flavours. Very smooth for the abv. But is a little flat for excitement factor.

Appearance: Bright with a great bubbly head. Smell: Some spicy notes in the nose. Taste: Mmmmmmmm. A lot going on here for me. Hops, spicy Belgian-ness, and really smooth on the finish. This beer is right up my alley. Mouthfeel: Very smooth. Drinkability: Yes, chilled, and all holiday season long if I’m lucky. Four Scowling Owls is on my current Short List of Favorite Beers.

I enjoyed the complexity of this one. Very clean, bright color (golden) and an aromatic head. Smells like orange and bubblegum, maybe some white pepper too. Definitely has that typical Belgian-style “kick.” Tastes spicy & sweet, don’t get a lot of hop balance but I think that’s okay for this style. Light – medium body, and a really nice finish. Warming, for sure. You only really sense the alcohol content at the end. Overall, I approve!

On tap @ Karl Strauss Costa Mesa. Amber/copper pour with an off-white head. Sweet fruity nose. A lot of orange juice, golden raisin, and apple. Some hints of alcohol, spice, light hops, caramel, and toasted malt. Strong sweetness to the flavor. Caramel, golden raisin, orange, and apple. A bit of alcohol, lots of spice, and some floral hops. Subtle amaretto character.

Clear medium yellow orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, light caramel, light to moderate hoppy, light dry grass, moderate yeasty, earthy. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light bitter with a long duration, fruity, yeasty, overriped fruit. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20131111]

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours light copper with a creamy white head. Aroma of light fruit. Med body, almost. Flavor is light fruit esters with some caramel and something suggesting earthy noble hop. Flavors are good, clean and not overpowering. Gets a bit spicy. Quite pleasant drink.
