COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A Belgium-style ale brewed with the changing seasons in mind. Firm toasty and sweet coffee-like malt flavors are underpinned by a subtle vanilla oakiness. Peppery spice adds character to this beer’s slightly dry and warming finish. 35 SRM 24 IBU 15.5 Plato

Pours a thin head on a clear light brown body. The aroma is nuts, wood and candy. Interesting. The taste is a bit watery, caramel sweet, toasted malt and mild vanilla. A nice warm finish though. The texture is thin. Quite drinkable, just not interesting.

March 22nd, 2013 - Karl Strauss is departing from the West Coast sacred traditions (where the spell ingredients are always hops) to dip in a Belgian direction. Their Double Belgium is a murky, muddy brown brew, and the smell is most distinctly tangly, with some rapberries and orange acidity. I also detect some cider, but it’s generally hard to smell, and stays close to the surface. I suspect this is because I preceded this brew with a Chipotle smothered in hot sauce. The flavor leads with a touch of acidity and some Brett funk, but it’s still mild, and the palate feels slightly more thin than I’d expect given the flavor. Mashed apple sweetness and dry apple cider flavor this brew, and I think it tasted better in the sampler glass than the full pint. Out in a wider pasture, it’s a little thin and too cider like for me to really dig it.

"kind of a different direction for a winter warmer...belgian aspects lighter in the aroma. mostly roasted malts with a touch of peppery spice and fruit. in the flavor, the 3 aspects are all about equal, with slight chocolate and caramel as well. light and robust at the same time. pretty cool beer. unique."

Draft at the tasting room. Pours amber brown with an off white head. Dark fruity yeasty esters, lighter spices, and some toasty and chocolate malty notes. Pretty good.

On tap at the brewpub. Appearance: fine brown color with excellent clarity and a semi-durable beige head that leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma: fruity with plenty of dried plums and alcohol infused raisins. Flavor: Lacks complexity. Bitter/sweet balance favoring the sweet side. Feel: medium-light body wih light carbonation. O: OK.

On tap at the brew outlet on Columbia St, San Diego on 18th March 2014. Brown with a minimal wispy head. Toffee sweetness in the nose and taste, not too sure where the ’Belgian-Style’ comes in but it was certainly sweet and sticky, some nutty flavours began to arrive as it warmed a little. Decent but too sweet for me, even though I have a sweet tooth.

Draught at Karl Strauss, Carlsbad. Clear deep amber/mahogany beer with a nice lasting beige head. Malty chocolate aroma, yeasty notes, caramel, dark bread, grassy, hay, figs, some cocoa. Malty roasted aroma, caramel, grassy, grapes, citrus, cocoa, some dark bread. Decent beer but not very Belgian.

March 23, 2014 - on tap at Karl Strauss Universal. Clear brown pour with some head and lacing. Aroma was yeast, spice, caramel and mild coffee. Taste was sweet with some pepper and finish was mild coffee.
