3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Karl Strauss Brewery and Restaurant in La Jolla; served on tap in a tulip. From notes. First reviewed 12/10/2008.
My pour is a light chocolate and amber color. It arrived with a small head, which stays around and leaves a light lacing on the glass. Suspiciously transparent.
A pleasant blend of oak, smoky malt, and chocolate.
The smoky, roasted malt taste is the first thing I notice, with with vanilla and coffee flavors coming in afterward. There is a slight hoppy kick at the end.
This has a medium level of carbonation, with a nice creaminess to it. At the same time, it is almost too light.
This is a very smooth beer, which I enjoyed, but I don’t know how many more I would want to drink. There are definitely better Browns out there.

2 feb 2012, bottle. Med nut brown, clear, some steady bubbles. Breast malt, overly toasted granola, coco beans. Med/full body and a tad fizzy. Peppery yellow raisins and powdery oval time matinees with some faint yeasty notes. Pretty good.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle. Head is off-white and mostly dissolves rapidly though what remains persists as a slick on top with a ring on the side. Lacing is mostly a frosty covering or gives broken coverage but is thin and fast. Body is a pleasant, clear brown like bronze. Overall it’s an appealing appearance.
Aroma is a little hoppy and a little charry a little sweet funky banana. So it’s kind of like a well-done banana nut bread.
Flavor carries the aroma well revealing more Belgian abbey trippel fruity notes. It is very mildly salty / sweet so mild that there is no finish.
Body is light / medium with a thin, slightly oily feel.
Overall, this is a good beer with thoughtful craftsmanship.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
A - poured dark red/brown with high tan head and some lacing.
S - Aromas of toasted malts and coffee up front. Notes of caramel, chocolate and oakiness as well.
M - smooth mf, with medium body and average carb.
T - tastes similar to smell. Toasted malts and coffee on the nose. Oakiness, coffee and cloves on the palate. Subtle note of banana (the belgian yeasts) and chocolate as well.
O - better than average, interesting belgian brown ale, good mixture of the light belgian fell with the darker brew.

Surprised to see this categorized as a brown ale rather than as a Belgian ale... Anyway, this brew hit the spot. Thinnish brown-amber appearance--translucent body, with a slice of head. Spicy root beer aroma and flavor that showcases the melding of brown malt and clovey Belgian character. Full-bodied, evincing a pleasing complexity.Spicy Belgian yeast, caramel and brown malts, all playing in sweet harmonic balance.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a draft into a pint glass at Bully’s East in San Diego, Calif. Color was mahogany, reddish brown. Maybe an inch of head. Circular lacing on the top. Good amount of film on the sides.
Smelled of roasty malts. Also some caramel malts in there as well. Hints of citrus in there, too.
Tasted cloves up front, followed by caramel, roasty malts. Banana and chocolate in there as well. Very smooth.
Medium body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Smooth finish.
I liked this beer a lot. This could’ve been a few spots higher or lower with the ratings, but I ended up with this rating. Good beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours semi-clear and cola-like with a minimal head and carbonation. Feels light in body but full in flavor. I taste coffee and spices coming together smoothly in a thin to average texture. It finished crisp and short. Pretty tasty (above average) but not worth seeking out.

2.2 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a dark cherry chocolate color with a thick head. Light and very subtle coffee aroma. Initial fruit on the front with a strong malty finish. Also, a faint hint of an oak arrives after the original settlement.
