3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ADfan (274) - Orange County, California, USA - SEP 25, 2011
Picked up a fresh jug from the restaurant. Poured a honey amber color with a nice head. Mild aroma of hops, pine and caramel. Taste was very smooth with some cedar and earthy notes. Smooth finish.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 otakuden (1558) - Vero Beach, USA - FEB 4, 2011
Appearance: typical Märzen hues of rubies, garnets, and ambers brilliantly polished. Coppery head lingers as a collar and swirls thick, but no lace either way.
Nose: toffee breads crunchy and caramelized and just a smidge moist. Chestnuts and acorns roasting. Whole grains crunch. Red-hot embers and firewood in the back. Nutmeg. Bark, piles of leaves changing color for the season.
Palate: thin and clean, she is sweet in the middle, finishing dry and woody. Within her sweetness is crunchy toffee and pumpernickel crust glazed in said crunchy toffee. Smoke in the back of breath, red-hot and embers. Nutmeg mingles within the toffee crunchy while the essence of leaves changing is a subtle permeation – gives the impression of an autumn chill in the air. Chestnuts and acorns in the fire-hot smoke and toffee.
Final Thoughts: way better than I was expecting. The flavors were seamless and even though I call the sunny state of Florida home, I felt as though I was right there in the mountains painted in autumn hues. Fantastic.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 mrhoppy (649) - Santa Clara, California, USA - DEC 22, 2010
A very sweet beer. Smells sweet and tastes sweet. One rater said it was like malt liquor-esque. I have to agree. I wish it had more bittering hops. I will have to do a mixing experiment with my other bottles. It’s clean crisp and flavorful. In your face malt. It’s just too sweet.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BrotherGrendel (777) - San Diego, California, USA - NOV 17, 2010
Bottle. Clear, bright orange with quickly dissipating head. Nose is quite subtle hints of grains, nuts, toast. Flavor is surprisingly flavorful with a full range of rich sweet malts, toast, caramel, nuts with a backbone of grassy hop bitterness, finishes sweet. Medium body, light carbonation, watery texture. A very solid marzen for this big brewery chain, malts are well-showcased here.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hopscotch (7542) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - NOV 2, 2010
Bottle… Clear, deep amber lager with a small, creamy, white head. Great retention. The aroma lures with NYC chestnuts roasting on an open flame, medium-roast malts, toasty notes and toffee. Light to medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. The flavor provides good balance among toasty, nutty goodness – maybe some date in here as well. Nutty, lightly sweet, toffee finish.

A nice Oktoberfest, clean and refreshing. ** I had this beer again at the SD Airport, it was darker, sweeter and maltier. The bartender assured me the keg was correct, but it tasted more like their Amber Lager.
