The aroma is almost similar to their brown ale except a little more roasted. The beer is dark dark brown, borderline black. The flavor really seems to be a little roastier than the Downtown After Dark Brown Ale. Still it was a nice beer.

On tap at churchill’s Pub. Dark brown, not very drinkable, lacy. Somewhat astringent and not a great example of the style.

I had this on tap at Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa, CA. It’s a dark brown pour with reddish highlights. It’s a bit on the light side, body-wise, but all in all, it’s a nice roasty porter.

On tap at the Universal location. Pours with a lasting tan head that leaves good lace over a light brown body (too light in color for a porter). Aroma is of cocoa, nuts, vanilla and milk chocolate. Flavors are nutty, dry, pencil shavings, earthy, woody, with some dark chocolate notes (bitter). Creamy bubbles over a somewhat light body.

On tap at karl strauss downtown. Pours a black oily color with a fluffy cream head, looks kind of like a pepsi that was shaken up a bit. The smell is malty with a robust burnt smell...not rosted, just burnt. The taste is very metallic, like my tongue is bleeding. The hop character is not flavorful, just bitter. Not a fan of this, but hey, they only have Strauss beers here so I’m kind of limited.

From the tap poured a dark browm color with a fair amount of head. Toasted malty flavor with a lingering finish.

Sampled from the tap@Sorrento Valley restaurant: Dark reddish-brown root beer color with a small tan head. Aroma was a little coffee and chocolate. Flavor followed aroma with some burnt malts and a light bite in the finish. Light body is smooth with moderate carbonation.

On tap a Carlsbad location. Leans dry. Roastiness is present, but at a lower level. Clear brown color. Somewhat easy to drink. Low in flavor.

On tap at La Jolla location Karl Strauss. Pours nice and dark with thin mocha head. The aroma comes across rich and inviting with roasty malts, caramelized malts and burnt malts. Very inviting. The flavor has an up front burnt maltiness that fades to more roasted malts and mild kettle caramelization. By midway I notice a thin watery sensation before the burnt malts return in force at the finish.
