3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12fl Oz BB 01/2015
Golden body, slight haze, holds a firm white head.
Good aroma with light caramel & grainy malts combining with spicy, wood hops with notes of stonefruit & citrus peel.
Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth mouthfeel.
Offers plenty of resiny woody & citrusy hops on the body, bolstered by a solid dose of toasty cereally pale malt goodness. Finishes with a firm but clean bitterness, very refreshing.
Nice APA, plenty to like.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tapped at Karl Strauss at the Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Aroma was malty in the back and I sensed a lot of spices and some good hops. Golden to copper color. Taste was a quite good balance of malt and bitter hops with a malty and bitter finish. Refreshing. A tasty beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle with Dad. Pours golden orange with a foamy off-white head, a good looking APA. Some nice peach and orange, floral notes in the nose but a lot of caramel malt. Taste is medium sweet, nice peach and citrus, but again a lot of caramel malt. Quite an old bottle will try it again fresh to get the full potential.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brew outlet on Columbia St, San Diego on 18th March 2014. Came a clear reddy amber/golden colour with a full head. Hops rule the brew here, citrus and floral in both the nose and taste. Uncomplicated and refreshing, suited the alcohol level: didn’t try to knock you over with hops and booze, just a pleasant brew.

Bottle from Yamaichi. Fresh yeasty nose with light grapefruit. Reddish copper color. Malty initial, light peaches, very smooth but slightly dirty hopping, final bitter notes do not linger very long. Medium body. Fairly typical APA. Well made. Would go well with some So Cal Mexican food.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Faultless APA. Pours deep amber with good clarity and medium, slightly off-white head. Great lacing. Upfront pine and caramel aromas, with interesting fruit notes coming through. Grapefruit is present, but also are some sweet tropical fruits. Body is medium-thin. While not particularly memorable, the taste is balanced and quite refreshing. An appropriate malt backing supports a medium bitterness that provides a biting finish, but not as exhaustive as an IPA.

I have to agree with zoot07 on this one, this is a better pale ale than what the scores and ratings suggest. The hops and malt balance is spot on as it treads that fine line between a subtle pale ale and IPA really well. This is one of the best pale ales around and great price for Aussie standards, robust , tasty and wonderful dry hopping. Well done Karl Strauss!

Honestly I struggle to see how this beer is rated as low as it is on here (to commercial for the hipsters?), this has become one of my go-to pale ales. Compared to other APA’s available in Australia in a comparable price range I reckon it’s hard to beat. The current batch I’m rating pours a golden, slightly amber colour with what I believe to be the perfect carbonation level for an APA, fluffy pillowy head dissipating slowly and leaving a goo bit of lacing, when poured at the right temp. The nose is brilliant; the dry hoped Amarillo really shines through when fresh. The taste is great, All the stone fruit, citrus and pine you would expect from this hop combo (Cascade, Newport and Amarillo) and I don’t get any metallic or off flavours at all. I’ve had this beer less fresh than this batch and got a bit of oxidation and the hops had faded a bit but was still a great beer. Overall a very clean drinking, true to style, hop forward APA. I think a lot of the local Aussie so-called craft breweries could learn from this one. Also the fact that it comes in a six-pack instead of four pack is a big bonus for me and still cheaper than the local equivalents? I have a real problem with the recent Aussie trend of selling craft beer in four packs, 18 - 22 buck for a four pack? Moo, Feral, Balmain, Murray’s.
