Bad a bottle at our hotel in San Diego. Pours a bright deep red, clear, with very small white head. Aroma of cherries, caramel, sweet sugars, plums, some other fruits. Flavor follows with big sweet cherries and fruits, sweet sweet caramel. Body is medium, with low medium carbonation, and extremely smooth going down. Nice sweet finish lingers on the palate. Thought this was a really good beer and went down incredibly easy. On the sweet side for the style but very pleasant.

Taster at La Jolla location. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a small tan head. Aroma is largely of caramel malts, with a slight hoppy backbone. Taste is sweet up front with a nice bold bitterness through the finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouth feel, and softer carbonation. Overall this was my favourite of the Karl Strauss brews I tried.

Very drinkable. Great ruby/ deep burnt orange color. Very minimal head, but decent carbonation nonetheless. Slightly sweet upon first tasting. Something I could probably make a decent session out of.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a nonic pint glass. There was no freshness date on the bottle. I got this at #BBC13.

Appearance: Beautiful red/dark copper color. Clear body with some carbonation visible. Forms a small, tan, sudsy head which mostly dissipates and doesnít lace the glass.

Smell: Malty for sure, but slightly astringent. Almost like it were stale.

Taste: According to their website, Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale was originally brewed as a Christmas beer, but they decided to make it year round. Thatís odd considering this is an Irish Red at the core. I have mixed feelings on the style, but I know what I like and this one, unfortunately, isnít it.

The palette begins with general caramel malt flavor. Itís not especially sweet, though itís pleasing enough I suppose. Faint hints of raisin as well. At the crest of the swig comes a dry bitterness, which seems much stronger than the advertised 17 IBUs. The finish is a strange sensation of off-flavors. Slightly oily, mostly nondescript astringency. This is disappointing because the beer started off well, but each swig became less and less enjoyable. Perhaps itís an old bottle, but itís probably just the recipe - one I just canít dig.

Drinkability: While I wasnít too crazy about the taste, Iíll admit that Karl Strauss Red Trolley Ale was no trouble getting down. The mouthfeel is rather thin and light for its weight. It goes down smooth, but does leave a slightly cloying aftertaste of dark fruit and dry bitterness. At 5.8% ABV there should be more flavor than there is.

UPDATED: SEP 30, 2013 A mild tasting and pleasant beer that I could drink quite a few of. Would not be upset if this was all a place had to drink
