A pretty good little beer. Its really malty! Sweet and flavorful, smooth. Pale Ale with sweetness. Overall pretty good, dark fruit hints, malty and crisp.

Bottle. Pours clear lightly hazy amber ruby with small off white head. Chalky malty floral aromas. Toffee, biscuit, sickly sweet malts, jelly, grapes, currants and floral aromas. Medium body, medium carbonation - a touch dry, but sickly sweet tofee and artificial sweetness through the finish with an ongoing floral hop character.

On tap, Karl Strauss at the San Diego Airport. Dark copper pour, with ruby highlights. Light tan head, with fair amount of lace. Not much of a nose, but what there is of it is malty. Malty flavor, caramel, nice body, mild finish. Very refreshing.

On tap at brewery. Very watery taste, not impressed at all, was hoping from tap would be better than bottle. Not great

Bottle. Pours clear red with a minimal head. Nose is malt, caramel, hops. Taste follows and is quite simple. Amazing that a few years ago, I loved this beer.

About time I rated this San Diego classic. From bottle into regular pint glass. Pours an attractive, dark red-brown. Head is thinnish and dies in a minute, although I’m not confident that this glass is "beer clean." Aroma is doppelbock--hopless sweet malt. Flavor is pretty well-rounded (within sweet overall). This beer feels great on the tongue; palate is perfectly balanced. I think I’ve had this beer fresher before, so this rating might be higher on another review.

A pleasing dark red color. Deceptive hoppy smell, with the taste being much more of a malty, somewhat caramelish taste. Very creamy.
