UPDATED: MAR 1, 2003 Average, but one of the first I have had in San Diego. Leave it up to an old ass man like karl straus to make a good brew. Solid in some aspects, but needs more hops, malts are slightly bland.

Not particularly hoppy, which is just fine with me. A touch of sourness, which adds complexity. A conservative, middle-of-the-road ale. Aimed at not offending anyone, perhaps. The pic of Karl Strauss on the label looks like Mikhail Gorbachev, I swear! Lots of caramel malt.

If you like the red/amber ales, this one is the litmus test I hold all others to. This beer goes down smooth and leaves a mild and pleasant aftertaste. Red Trolley is rich in taste, but not overpowering; the alchohol melds well with the flavors and does not produce a strong or bitter bite like some other ales. My favorite beer.

Draft: Red brown, no head, sweet aroma. Taste is sweet with hints of stout, caramel, and bitter chocolate.

not bad, not too great, very drinkable but lacks any further distinction, especially in the flavor department. Taste is just average.

Good copper red color. Very fragrant toasty malt nose with some Italian herbs mixed in. Big creamy sweet malt flavor with some decent hops bitterness in the after taste. This is a nice brew. Iím impressed...

Bottle. Pours a Bronze-Red colour. Aromaís of mainly caramel and sultanaís. Taste. Definitely can taste the Caramel as others have stated, but also notice Black liquorice flavours along with a slight currant flavour, almost no hop flavours but it does finish with a slight bitterness. Palate. This is quite thick and a little syrupy in the mouth. Overall. This is a beer that delivers a nice sweetness, yet isnít too sweet and has no off flavours. This beer would be very good with sticky date pudding and other desserts.

Bij de clam chowder uit plastic glas of fles. Ruikt zoet. Rodige kleur, prima schuim. Prima smaak, lekker fris fruitig.

Nice drop. Had several times in the last two weeks, must say I like it less each time - not sure why. Perhaps the batch was on itís last legs by the time it got to Australia. The foam on the first few were reasonable and held OK, but the one last night hardly formed and didnít hold. Nice reddish brown colour - tastes of caramel and malt. Length of palate is medium, longer than a larger - shorter than other dark ales. Overall happy, but will look for another Irish Red Ale to become a regular other than this one.
