COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A light amber colored ale brewed with plenty of Marris Otter and Rye malt for a full-bodied and robust flavor. The beer’s unique spice character comes not only from the Rye, but also from the imported Phoenix hops used to dry-hop the casks.

$8 growler from the Sorrento Valley location: Murky peach color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is fruity sweet with a strong rye presence. Flavor starts sweet caramel followed by rye and citrus with a lingering, dry grapefruit bitter finish. Medium body is tangy with moderate carbonation. Nice.

Rye malt on the nose soft floral and citrus notes. Pours golden amber with nice lace and a thin head. Flavors of rye malt, spicy with some grain floral and some dank hops in the finish. A little chewy resins and pepper linger. Well made. Karlstrauss.com!

Draft at KS Carlsbad. Light hazy orange gold with a big, heavy lacing, yellow tinged head. Nose of citrus and light pine and rye bread. Flavor was moderate bitterness with yeasty rye breadiness. My IPA loving son in law thought this was excellent as did I.

Clear golden coped with a fizzy white head. Faint malty aroma. Earthy malt grain and citrus taste with a fairly clean and refreshing finish.

Sample off the hand pump @ Toronado San Diego. Pours a mostly clear deep amber color with a small off white head. Big nose of rye malt, herbal hops and was quite sweet. Flavor was also quite sweet with a good rye base, very full flavored, medium in body. A very cool brew.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2008 On cask at Pizza Port real ale festival. This was a surprise to see a Karl on tap since they usually only share their beer with their restaurants but I knew I had to sample this offering. It had a bread and slight grain aroma yet subdued under the obvious smell of alcohol that only beer alone would give off. The appearance was a medium tan brown and had a thin layer of foam I’m accustomed to with KS’s ales. Flavor was somewhat empty and held no strong backbone other than the light bread notes and sweet malt. I am willing to re-taste this one.
