The beer is an Imperial IPA brewed to celebrate 2009. Unlike most Imperial IPAís that are very citrussy/piney from Pacific Northwest hops, To the 9ís uses a lot of noble hops for a more earthy, resinous, woodsy aroma and flavor. We used 9 different hop varieties so the beer is very complex.

Pours a slightly hazed, orange color with pink highlights and moderate carbonation to give just a whisper of head from the 22oz. bomber (old bottle) into my pint glass. This is my first rating in months as I get back into the groove: Nose of cantalope, spiced cedar/oak, orange zest oils, caramel malts, and earthworm. Dry throughout. Bittering finish. Slight alcohol presence, though subdued by a strong under pull of malted sweetness. Drinkability: Strong, sweet, satiated. Rebuy: Yes. Pairing: Dried cranberries sprinkled over soft bread pudding. #471 on 11092010, DG.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a huge development of puffy foamed head while the beer was a golden blonde dense liquid. My nose detects a combination of hops that send different memories through my mind such as orange and a grapefruit tree with a light background of some English hops too. The flavor is bitter with a touch of sweetness and a fruity undertone. A heavy hitter with the alcohol content but not so much in the flavor and actually I thought it was an average impy IPA.

10 nOv 2011, bottle. Honey grassy hop nose. Med/thin body and slightly fizzy. Really nice. Alcohol makes this a really nice Rich ipa that isnít extreme but absolutely delicious.

Bomber from Valley Farm. Deep hazy amber in color. Mild hop nose. Somewhat sweet. Hops and a bit of alcohol. Some maltiness. The year on this beer must have killed most of the hops. Thick and full beer. Still pretty tasty, though Iím sure it was alot more impressive when fresh.

22oz bottle from Bevmo in L.A. Pours a slightly hazy amber, head is cream in colour and recedes from a thick pillow of foam to thin lacing fairly quickly. Aroma is caramel malt with thick, jammy hops. Some earthy and piney notes plus an evident sweetness. Taste is very hop forward, slight white wine, berry sweet note with hops riding in to crush it. Bitterness is pronounced and lingering, some pine some more earthy notes...but I wonder if the sheer number of hops causes a slight "too many cooks" neutering of the flavour. Itís a good beer, donít get me wrong, but it lacks a distinctness. Finish is bitter and slightly boozy. Hmmm...very good but perhaps my expectations were too high?

Hazy orange with a medium off white head. Hoppy nose with grapefruits, pine and peach. Loads of hops in the grapefruity flavour that also carried, peach, lemons and oranges. Hints of malt in there as well. Dry and bitter. Finish.

Bottle. Amber beer with a big cream colored head. Big woodsy aroma with malt and light earth. Caramel and malt flavor with woodsiness and citrus. Medium bodied. decent bitterness. Caramel and earth lingers with woodsiness.

Bottle: Pours a hazy orange with a small ivory head. The aroma is dominated by citrus, mostly orange, some pine and sweet malt. The taste is mostly citrus with a hint of caramel and some alcohol burn/astringency on the finish. This beer is medium heavy and as I focus on the mouth feel it has a slightly oily character. This is a decent IIPA and a pleasant surprise from Karl Strauss.

Clear yellow orange color. Aroma is sweet, some citrus hops and brown sugar. Flavor has a hint of spice, sweetness and some bitter hops. Balanced and has a light lingering bitter finish.

Pours cloudy orange with very little head. Sharply bitter - hops of the citrus and pine sort - with some sweet citrus and caramel to counter. Good balance here, and lots of flavor to belie the mild-to-moderate aroma. Good stuff.
