COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.

Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavor IPA.

Taster at La Jolla location. Pours a clear yellow colour with a big frothy white head. Aroma of grassy and citrus hops with some light bread and caramel malts. Taste is slightly sweet but mostly bitter, though not greatly bitter like I would like for an IPA. Medium body, good carbonation, and smooth on the palate. Good beer, alright IPA overall.

Pours clear amber with a small lacing off white head. Aroma is hoppy citric grapefrity malty. Spot on great bitter flavor with lnglasting finish, lacking the fruits though, a bit unbalances.

On tap in a hotel bar in Orange County. A fairly pleasant IPA. Copper in color with an off white head with good lacing. Citrus, pine and some caramel malt in the nose. Taste is mostly bitter with a touch of sweetness. Menu body. Worth a try.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. I couldnít find a freshness date. I got this from #BBC13.

Appearance: An opaque, dark shade of orange. Forms a large, off white, frothy head that retains and laces pretty well.

Smell: Sweet, clean aroma of orange and pine. Almost candy-like.

Taste: I was skeptical about Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA, because the last time I tried it I really didnít like it (long story). But now that Iím drinking it under ideal conditions Iím actually quite surprised how appealing it is now. Plenty of hop bitterness and flavor, but a prominent malt presence to give it true balance (which is surprising considering the city in which itís made).

The first thing I notice is how sweet the malt base is. According to the breweryís website, itís made with a touch of lightly-kilned caramel malts, and it shows. Sweet yes, but nothing cloying or sticky as is often the case in bigger beers of the style. Itís also made with Chinook hops which tend to have astringent bitterness, but in this case theyíre even out well with the Cascade and Centennial dry hops. Significant pine flavor throughout the first half of the palette, follow by citrusy tartness on the finish. I detect a hint of sweet tea or some kind of earthy/herbal character, but itís restrained enough to make it genuinely pleasurable.

Drinkability: At 70 IBUs and 7% ABV, youíd think Tower 10 IPA wouldnít be that easy to drink. While it certainly has an energetic presence in the mouth, the delivery itself is comfortable from start to finish. The hops do linger, but are tolerable for sure. I could see this beer being quite versatile.

6 pack from dan murphys, poured into tulip glass, aromas of passion fruit and grapefruit, clear amber colour, taste is the same as aromas with a sharp bitterness, has good length, a very good session ale and well priced

12floz bottle into a tulip. Pours a lovely golden yellow with a finger of bubbly white head. Nose is really fruity and delicious. I get a really strong mandarin citrus component, as well as a bit of a floral note, some peach and just a hint of sweetness. On the palate you get a big hit of that pine and grapefruit from the Chinook, a bit of bread, some sweet caramel, just a touch of the mandarin from the nose, and a nice bitter finish that lingers. Body is medium and mouthfeel is pretty rich. Leaves some decent lacing. Great balance, but I would have liked more of the aroma to carry through to the flavour.
