2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Clear amber with medium foamy head. Mild aroma of woodsy and piney hops. Watery to slightly fluffy feel from carbonation. Just a bit of btie on the tip of the tongue. More flavor from the roast than the hops. Woodsy, grassy, slightly resiny hop. Finishes pretty clean, the finishing bitterness remains more on the tip and top of the tongue instead of the back. A decent pale, but falls short of expectations for an IPA.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Decent IPA. The aroma is the best part with a strong honey and lemon zest character coming through with the hops. The appearance is light golden and orange. The taste has more malt than I expected with the hps only playing lightly on the tongue. Decent beer, but nothing special

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
compliments of JW32hoops.. loved the stargazer so lets see how this stacks up.. pours a very deep copper almost a honeykissed bleeding brick coloration.. quickly dissipating head.. the aroma is fairly nonexistent but I do sense a light floral hoppiness... initial hit to the palate is different than Id expect out of an ipa.. cherry and caramel.. subtle hops that disappear quickly... did the folks at karl strauss slip an amber into this ipa label..color, carbination, content all very reminissant of an amber with the maltiness holding court rather than the hops.. Im torn... In terms of IPAís this is a weak sister but overalll I like the taste. Very similar to the stargazer, eerily similar.... you know what... Ill have another one though..... not bad karl strauss, you macro bully of socal micro supremacy.. you actually backed into a helluva amber ale, too bad youre calling it an IPA... shame on you....

2.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Large head. Hazy body. Aroma of roasted malt, heavy yeast, and dates and nutmeg. Full, creamy and lively texture, with a huge metallic finish. Light sweetness, moderately acidic, with a bitter aftertaste. Nutty and acidic.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear yellow with white head. Floral aroma, with a bit of pine and citrus. Sweet floral front with some fruity flavors and a bit of a bitter crisp finish.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a gold color just off of clear. Short lasting white head. Decent amount of pine and citrus hops in the nose. Flavor follows with much the same but with an alcohol component that doesnít quite fit in. The bitterness is more astringent than bitter, per se. Still, a nice beer despite it not quite gelling together.

3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pungent hoppy aroma gives one a feeling of fear and excitement. Flavor of hops, lime, grapefruit. Has the aftertaste of eating the gross white part of an orange. Not nice. My guess is it comes from a hop variety that Iím not loving. I give cred for what they tried to do, but it doesnít do it for me

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz bottle in San Diego. Pours a beautiful orange with solid 1/2 inch rocky off-white head. It collapses into a persistent film that hangs around throughout. Aroma is typical of a mainstream "hoppy" IPA with its somewhat citrus + pine resin hoppiness along with wafts of sweet caramel malt base. Taste is pretty similar with that mainstream bitterness-offsets-sweet-malt nature. Nothing special although itís a lot better than many others Iíve tasted; still, it falls well short of what it could be. It would be so much better if it had more of a prominent citrus aroma, but Iím left wanting. This bottle has a unique metallic flavor thatís rather unpleasant in the final aftertaste. Not a bad example but there are many other west coast examples that Iíd rather go for.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 19, 2013 This beer is actually better out of the bottle than it is straight from the tap. Pale orange with a thin white head. Very balanced, but the quality is "meh". Just doesnít have that "wow" factor that most SD IPAs have. Good entry level IPA for those trying to broaden their palate.
Re-rate: tap at the Carlsbad location. They mustíve reworked the recipe. Flavor is much better. Distinct hop profile now... grass, lemon, pine. Aroma is still not really there. Palate is dryer and longer with the bitterness really settling on the tongue.

Bottle at friendís place. He got this one for free--good thing. Not much going on here, nose is kinda of like unfermented wort--he said grape nuts and he was right. Flavor is bitter up front, a little grapefruit. Backend is kind of skunky. Meh.
