Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.

Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavor IPA.

Bottle received from thome50. Fairly clear amber, orange color with a large white head. Aroma has a hint of citrus and floral notes, with caramel also being present. Taste floral and slightly soapy. Caramel comes up mid palate and leads to a minutely bitter finish. Loads of lacing left on my glass. This really could have been much worse, and if it had a bit more hop presence could have been pretty good.

Bottled. Poured into pint glass. Mild aroma, nothing strong. Nice color that is dark amber, very little head. It taste a little under carbonated, and possibly not fresh. I think this is my first experience with this beer, so I don’t know what it might be like if very fresh. It was a gift from a friend, purchased at Cost Plus, so I’m thinking it might have been sitting on a warm shelf awhile. Might try again if known fresh and rerate.

Bottle, 355ml. A clear amber beer with a small white head. Aroma is of hops, malt, citrics and maybe chlorine (reminds me of when I’m close to a pool). Taste is bitter with some carbonation. Medium bodied, astrigent and dry. Strong hoppy finish with a hint of mint.

From DM. Clear Orange/copper in colour, foamy white head. Caramel and strong hop aroma. Bitter pine and spice and sweet caramel taste that is a little rough, but otherwise quite OK.

12 oz bottle. Pours an attractive dark copper with a finger or so of white, fluffy foam. Aroma is faintly of grapefruit and pine, just as the description promises, along with some brown sugar, or something of the sort. Initial flavor is extra bitter, with the palate mellowing quickly to bring in some cinnamon flavor to balance out the malt, hops, and overriding pine. The grapefruit appears ot have taken a hiatus... Wait, no, it’s still there, but the body loses overall integration after the mid-palate, and so the subtleties get lost in the disintegration of the body, fading into a somewhat watery, though not displeasing, finish. This is a quality beer, for one produced in such quantity. About what you’d expect from Karl...

A- Pours a deep, cloudy orange hue with a 1.5 finger, frothy head that fades with quite a bit of lacing. S- Very grainy, caramel, slight hints of grassiness. T- Starts off very bready which leads into a wave of hops and a nice, crisp, bitter finish. M- Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. D- A refreshing IPA. Doesn’t stand out a whole lot but I would revisit.
