COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.

Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavor IPA.

Bottle, from Henry’s. $6.50 a six pack. This is a new release, apparently taking the place of Stargazer. Looks nice, smells nice, but the flavor is rather dull. It’s hoppy, but it lacks the brightness and fruitiness I crave in an IPA. For whatever reason, Karl Strauss bottled beer has never impressed me like their draft beers. My guess is that this is really good on tap. As it is now, it’s just OK.

Draft at Disney’s California Adventure Park. Nose is pine and citrus hops. Lightly hazy amber with a medium beige head. Flavor is light bitterness which lasts to the finish. Not bad for Disneyland.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden orange with a small white head. Crisp hoppy and mango fruity aroma. Dry flavoured, light malt presence and a lot of mango to grapefruity flavours. Bitter and dry hopy finish with a persisting fruity flavour.

bottle thanks to the tick loving bhensonb. poured a nice amberish gold with a soapy white head and some lace. aroma had a strong malt backbone and maybe a bit of cereal or biscuit and the smallest hint of pine. flavor was grass, alcohol (like cheap vodka), pine and some caramel. medium body with medium carbonation. thanks bill for yet another step to 1000.

[On-tap] Pours decent amber color with a small lingering off-white head. Taste isn’t too bad. Nice fruitiness up front—grapefruit and tangerine with a little alcohol, some faint carraway, and then dominant malt that carries through to the end. Too malt driven for my liking, but not bad. Aroma is pretty good, although really not much that is really interesting worth noting about it. Just citrusy hops with some grassiness mixed in, a touch of peach and some malt. Pretty good mouthfeel, very smooth, dry finish that is a little short. Overall the mouthfeel is the strength of this beer, but it actually is pretty decent, and very drinkable. If the hop character was jacked up in the taste, and increased a bit in the nose as well, it would be a very solid beer.

Location: On tap at the SD Airport, 1/9/10

Aroma: Peach, grapefruit, caramel, and pine notes
Appearance: Caramel color with lots of lace on the glass
Flavor: Hop bitterness up-front, caramel malt backing
Palate: This beer is crisp and nice, pretty dry
Overall Impression: A pretty nice IPA, not a standout, but a more then adequate example of the style, and a really nice beer to kill some time while waiting for my plane to take off.

compliments of JW32hoops.. loved the stargazer so lets see how this stacks up.. pours a very deep copper almost a honeykissed bleeding brick coloration.. quickly dissipating head.. the aroma is fairly nonexistent but I do sense a light floral hoppiness... initial hit to the palate is different than Id expect out of an ipa.. cherry and caramel.. subtle hops that disappear quickly... did the folks at karl strauss slip an amber into this ipa label..color, carbination, content all very reminissant of an amber with the maltiness holding court rather than the hops.. Im torn... In terms of IPA’s this is a weak sister but overalll I like the taste. Very similar to the stargazer, eerily similar.... you know what... Ill have another one though..... not bad karl strauss, you macro bully of socal micro supremacy.. you actually backed into a helluva amber ale, too bad youre calling it an IPA... shame on you....
