Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.

Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavor IPA.

Bottle. Dirty gold color with a thin off-white head on top. Caramel and resin dominate the scent with toffee and biscuity notes joining in. Not bad at all but I wasn’t overly thrilled with this one. There’s some sharp bitter citrus hops but the malt bill seems too heavy, with quite a bit of grain and caramel. Dry and bitter in the finish with a lot of lingering malt.

The aroma is fresh and grassy and the flavour is more subtly bitter than most IPA’s.

Draught at LAX. Medium copper. Decent citrus nose, grass, light caramel. Flavor is somewhat sweet, with decent hops and a bit too much caramel. Noce grassy hop finish. Decent, not inspiring.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2013 Bad bottle last time? Much fresher with better cleaner more moden hop definition. Green fruits are nice and there’s a mild ping of metal. Very slurpable.

355ml bottle. Pours a clear orange amber colour with a frothy off-white head and aroma of crystal malt, caramel, lemony citrus. Taste is malt caramel with sweet tropical fruit mango, hoppy grapefruit citrus & woody pine bitterness. Slightly oily mouth feel, medium bodied soft carbonation, residual sweetness through to a dry bitter finish. Quite OK IPA.

Pours clear amber with a small lacing off white head. Aroma is hoppy citric grapefrity malty. Spot on great bitter flavor with lnglasting finish, lacking the fruits though, a bit unbalances.

Taster at La Jolla location. Pours a clear yellow colour with a big frothy white head. Aroma of grassy and citrus hops with some light bread and caramel malts. Taste is slightly sweet but mostly bitter, though not greatly bitter like I would like for an IPA. Medium body, good carbonation, and smooth on the palate. Good beer, alright IPA overall.
