COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
San Diego may not top the list for birdwatchers but it certainly tops the list for beer-drinkers. And while you’re more likely to spot a Sea Turtle than a Turtle Dove, tracking down a world class beer is easy. Two Tortugas is the 2nd addition to our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. This Belgian-inspired Quadruple Ale has a delicate union of toffee, dark fruits, and warming spices that will continue to develop with age. Raise a glass to 2011 or save a bottle for 2021, this turtle’s got legs.

A really solid big bodied maltfest. Really liked this brew. A bit of spices but really a powerpack of malts that are awesome!

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2012 Bomber from Plaza Wine and Spirits in Mira Mesa: Chill haze dark caramel amber color with a medium, fading beige head. Aroma is toffee, raisin and prune. Flavor starts rich caramel and dark fruit with hints of dark rum followed a little cinnamon and a hint of clove with a light bitter finish balancing the rich start. Medium-full body is smooth and oily with moderate carbonation.

On tap at Downey brewing it has a dark amber color. Not a strong aroma but what there is its toasted fruits. The taste has caramel and some honey to it, kind of like a candied sugar. In the end there there is more dark fruits. Texture is very rich with a smoothh finish.

Pours a clear ruby color with a thin white head. Aroma bubblegum, vanilla and banana bread. Taste is sweet, fruity, cherry, spicy, herbal and delicious. I’m more impressed than I thought possible coming from Karl Strauss.

Pours a dark orange in color. Really quite sugary sweet but not cloying at all. Seems a little weak for a quad but an interesting take for a Cali Christmas.

Very interesting Belgian style. Smells of cherries, and pours a deep red. Quite sweet taste of cherries and vanilla. But not too overwhelming. Sipping beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear amber/brown with minimal head and lace. Rich aromas of cherries, caramel, fig, and rum. Caramel came forward in the flavor profile, but the rum-soaked cherries were still strong. Burnt candy sugar and yeastiness give it a sense of authenticity I really wasn’t expecting. Medium body, moderate carbonation, oily mouthfeel, and a dark fruit sweetness in the finish. I was ready to smack this down for calling itself a quad, but as I worked through it, I came to really appreciate it. A rather pleasant surprise.
