San Diego may not top the list for birdwatchers but it certainly tops the list for beer-drinkers. And while you’re more likely to spot a Sea Turtle than a Turtle Dove, tracking down a world class beer is easy. Two Tortugas is the 2nd addition to our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. This Belgian-inspired Quadruple Ale has a delicate union of toffee, dark fruits, and warming spices that will continue to develop with age. Raise a glass to 2011 or save a bottle for 2021, this turtle’s got legs.

On tap @ Uncle Henry’s Deli. Lightly hazed copper pour with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet raisin, plum, and banana. Lots of caramel and brown sugar notes. A bit of chocolate and toasted bread...maybe some booze. Flavor is quite sweet as well. Bit time dark fruit, brown sugar, and caramel. Chocolate syrup, toast, and bananas. Mild yeast, alcohol, and clove spiciness. Not bad.

Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Fred can fix ya up! Pours dark ruddy copper with no head. Aroma is dark fruit with touches of treacle and light spice. Smooth aroma. Full bodied. No trace of heat. Flavors of darkish fruit, touch of treacle, and a fair amount of grapeish malt. Some warming does show in the finish. Amazingly gracious ale.

Good dense yellow head; red-brown beer with lively carbonation. Wood, caramel, shoecream, and again this "Crème Anglaise", this time in the nose. Sweet and fruity character, caramel and red grapes, ashes. Well carbonated, medium to well-bodied; Very good and rich Belgian strong dark ale.

Bottle. Pours with a hazy bronze hued body with a decently sized tan head that slowly fades to a ring. Good lace and some alcohol legs left behind on the sides of the glass. Aromas are strongly estery and malty. Lots of banana, even at a distance. Caramel, grainy, light chocolate, alcohol, grand manier, and pears. No hops aromas to speak of. Some caramelization. Flavors are alcohol forward, banana, light phenol (clove and some other spices), more esters, honey, malty, grainy, raisin-bran cereal, mild chocolate, orange essence/liquor. Ashy/dusty chocolate, mild table grapes. Complex if not scattered malt character. Light balancing bitterness. On the slightly sweet side overall. Alcohol is definitely there. Bigger body with medium-light carbonation. Warming. Pretty decent.

"a surprisingly excellent holiday ale. not that KS isn’t decent, but i had my odubts about a quad. on one hand, those doubts are legit. this in no way is like the traditional belgian "quads"...rochefort, bernardus...the color falls somewhere between the golden Stoic and darker belgians, and the aroma and flavor are more cinnamon and vanilla than belgian yeastiness, though some dark fruit is present too. the only beer i;ve had like this one is 21st Ammendment Monks Blood (which is pretty dang good) so i have to give this it’s due. not what i expected, but VERY tasty, and hides the abv about as well as any beer i’ve ever had."
