4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 riversideAK (4570) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - MAY 17, 2007
An oakey, roasty, whiskey malty aroma. Is black with a big bubbly naturally carbonated head. The flavor is dominated by the oak whiskey, followed by the chocolate roasty malt flavor. This is a nice specially brewerd Karl beer. A nice switch from the norm for these guys.

This was the surprise (IMO) of the Pizza Port Real ALe fest 2006. Usually Karl Strauss’ brews are tame & middle of the road, but this beauty was flavorful, well-balanced and very nicely done.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 zug4abby (287) - San Diego, California, USA - JUN 14, 2006
On cask at PP Real Ale Festival 2006. I must say i’m not usually one to go for the more mainstream beers at festivals (especially a fest like Real Ale) but had heard that this brew was GOOD! Pours a rich, dark brown color with a decent sized tan head and some lasting lacing. Aroma is roasty and slightly malty with a hint of the barrel aged yumminess coming through. Flavor is very similar, strong roast and malt presence with a definite whiskey note through-out. Very smooth and not over-powering on the palate. I was truly impressed with this beer!
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Vac (2442) - Soon to be back in San Diego, California, USA - JUN 12, 2006
(On cask at the PP Real Ale Fest 2006) A medium thick head sits atop the dark brown to black body of this brew and a good amount of lacing clings to the glass. This brew is full bodied, slightly sweet and malty with a nice roasted coffee note, a touch of vanilla and the slightest hint of whiskey. This was totally unexpected and a nice surprise from Karl Strauss.
