Wynne (22), , Pennsylvania, USA Dec 19, 2008 Updated: Jan 17, 2009Color is almost black, like a stout; head is pink and in bright light the body shines like a ruby. Perfectly blended sour and sweet cherry flavors with soft hints of chocolate, and very faint hints of wood and red wine and cola (also black currant, as another user stated) and possibly pomegranate and ambrosia as well. Almost mythical in flavor. Fizzy, round, and rich, a symphony of taste floating across your tongue and making sweet love to your tastebuds. Despite the rich flavor, it is just slightly less heavy than the blond and bruin Kasteel, and perhaps more charming for that reason. Beats every sweet and sour kriek I have had in Belgium. Even people I know who do not go for kriek or Kasteel had to admit this one was pretty damned good. I can’t imagine it tasting better than this--if it did, my tongue might have spasms. The head does indeed die fast, not that it mattered to me. One note--make sure you do not have a sweet dessert before you drink this or it might taste too sour; this beer itself can serve as a fantastic dessert. In my experience women are more inclined to enjoy kriek, but that is not always the case. If you like a truly sublime oak-barrel-aged dessert sherry, this will be right up your alley, and you might even like it better. Kriek of the GODS. ogivlado (3036), Zagreb, Croatia Dec 18, 2008 Bottled 750ml. -Dark red/ruby coloured, medium sized dark pink head that went away fast, sour cherry nose. Sweet and sour cherry taste with notes of marzipan. The finish and aftertaste is very sour and long lasting. One-dimensional but pleasant and refreshing kriek. Rciesla (3510), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Dec 15, 2008 Bottle and Draft. Pours a ruby brune body with a tan head pink head. Sweet cherries with a light woodiness and maple. Light sour cherry notes dry finish with faint vinous notes maybe its the extra abv. Great stuff. jimbowood (947), Athens, Georgia, USA Dec 13, 2008 bottle at dipalmas. Wow! Great find. Billed as the brewerys Christmas beer, this is very close to Cuvee de tomme, only sweeter and drier. Nonetheless, this is excellent. Choc covered cherries. Yum. KnutAlbert (3108), Oslo, Norway Dec 8, 2008 Bottled as Kasteel Rouge at the Lowlander, Lonon.
Sweet berries. Cherries, blackcurrants. Not very impressive as a kriek, its mostly lemonade. krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA Dec 2, 2008 11.2 thanks jim! the color is deep purple brown with reddish edges. the aroma is like black cherry cola. tart cherry dominates while hints of chocolate hide behind it. maybe a little one dimensional. this is a great beer however, i would like to serve it with cheesecake or anything chocolate. Straling (185), Heerlen, Netherlands Dec 1, 2008 Bottle 33cl.
Pours a dark and clear ruby colour with a small size head and loads of carbonation.
Smell is ofcourse that of cherries, but not so much that it is overwhelming.
Taste on the other hand is a bit too mich of the cherries.
Very sweet, goes down a little warm, but aftertaste also almost only the cherries. hughie (3016), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Nov 21, 2008 Under the ’Kasteel Rouge’ label. Very dark red with a pinkish head. Bittersweet cherrystone aroma. Sweet fruity taste soon yields a sharp, dry finish. I’ve had a few bland, syruppy cherry beers lately. This was pretty artificial, but a step in the right direction.
