COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kasteel Rouge is a blend of Kasteel Donker and cherry liquor. The mix of these two excellent products creates an exceptional soft beer with references to the dark mother beer.

Bottle to tulip glass, pours a dark transparent red with a small off white top. Aroma carries cherries, candy, grape, roses and other estery things. Noticeably artificial smelling however...there are also notes of cough syrup which doesn’t spell good things. Taste...hmm...black forest cake with a mixture of marachino and sour cherries. The malt backbone of the original beer does carry this quite well...lots of sweet/sour/savoury notes...and it’s surprisingly authentic tasting which is a good surprise. Palate...medium bodied, balanced quite well, co2 medium, finishes nice and dry but not overly so. Overall, pleasantly surprised, a good beer.

Bottle. Pours a ruddy brown with a beige head. Smells like maraschino cherries. Flavour is sweet candied cherry with a very tasty sour and tart backbone and light vanilla notes. Love this beer.

33cl Bottle: BBD 10/2015. Poured into a Forbidden Fruit chalice on my patio on 15th May 2014. I didn’t even notice it was a Kriek until I had a sniff! Must wear my glasses when buy and selecting beers. Anyway, light salmon bubbles that sadly faded sat on top of a ruby red body. Actually the aroma almost hides the fact the beer is cherry based, well it does when it’s cold. The beer is a bit too sweet for me, I prefer the slightly sourer Kriek beers that Belgium is famous for. This reminded me of an alcoholic Bakewell Tart.

If all fruit beer was as good as Kasteel Rouge, I’d seek it out more often. It’s rare that you find a beer that captures fruity sweetness without being cloying, gimmicky, or too much like a soda. Rouge is such an ale. It works because of the exceptional balance. The ale has a brownish-red color and fizzy head. On the nose, you get yeast, booze, and a hell of a lot of cherry. A strong cherry note is present in the flavor, as you’d expect. It starts off with candy sweetness. Toward the end, the incredible sugariness is countered by tartness and some subtle yeast funk. At the very conclusion of this long finish, sweet cherry returns with a bone dry, syrupy sensation. Despite the lively appearance, this ale has a remarkably smooth body that lets the flavors shine. People that love ales infused with fruit and Belgian ales should definitely give this a try.

Black cherry ice cream aroma. Mostly sweet taste with just a hint of tart cherry. Very tasty fruit beer. Not much complexity.

Decent but you have to be in the mood for it. Cherry and other tart fruit aromas. Rosy brown hue. Light palate with a good amount of carbonation. The sweetness and cherry flavors arrive first followed by a malty background. No real semblance of hops bitterness here. Fruity and desert-like and good for a few occasions.
