Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Nov 12, 2007 Draft at Monk’s Cafe, under the Rouge label. Fire engine red with a firm top. Sweet cherry aroma, of course. This drinks like a liquid cherry Jolly Rancher, sugary-candied sweet, but somehow still enjoyable. (#3188, 11/9/2007) Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA Nov 12, 2007 On Tap @ Papago
The beer pours a deep black cherry color, the head creamy and reddish purple in color, the size modest, as it depletes, and the lace forms a thin but concealing sheet. Nose is steeped in sweet ripe cherries, with a nut-like undertone, tart and crisp, a real delight for the ocular and olfactory senses. Start is ripe sweet fruit at the front; tart at the back, hint bitterness also present, top is moderate in feel. Finish has a stinging acidity, tart cherry flavor carries to the end, not a hint of the eight percent alcohol, what a “Hoot”.
Odeed (1666), Bakersfield, California, USA Nov 11, 2007 nice balance of sweet and sour on this one.id drink this again for sure.thanks to aspedities for the sample. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Nov 6, 2007 A Mes rate: 75cl bottle from Quaffs thanks to our Terry. Very dark transluscent blood red with a thin pinky white head. Smells almost exactly like Mr. Kipling Cherry Bakewell cakes. More juice than fruit and fairly artificial but I can’t help but really like it. Some almond and marzipan in there too. Flavour is the same but a little on the sharp side. Just a faint wisp of alcohol but it’s pretty well hidden on the whole. Ridiculously sweet and tart. Entertaining but not fantastic. islay (470), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Oct 31, 2007 12 oz. pour into a Kasteel trappist glass, on tap at Blue Nile in Minneapolis on 10-30-2007. I drank this as I awaited the release of Surly Darkness ’07. Labeled as “Kasteel Rouge.” Sharp, sour, fruit aroma: cherry (not surprisingly), raspberry, sweet red wine, cherry cough syrup. Also dessert scents: milk chocolate, cream, cherry cordial candy. Pours a translucent dark brown, a deep mahogany with a red hue. Moderate amount of light pink, frothy, fluffy, uneven head with large bubbles. Produces nice lacing. Unique and intriguing appearance. Very fruity and sour, wine-like taste. Red grape juice, cherry, cherry syrup, cherry-flavored sucking candy, cough syrup, and sugar candy flavors. Not a bad strong Belgian bruin ale underneath the cherry, but the fruit flavors almost completely overshadow the base beer. Odd but good, dry fruit aftertaste. Medium body. Somewhat oily in the palate. Lively on the tongue. I’m not a huge fruit beer guy, and make no mistake; this is a fruit beer, but Kasteel Rouge seemed to be well made, and I’m glad I tried it. SSSteve (2049), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 30, 2007 pours a black cherry color with a small fizzy pink head. aroma of black cherries. flavor is very sweet as expected from the makers of the sweetest beer of all time! kasteel donker of course. somewhat medicinal finish with a strange hint of raw pumpkin guts. not sour..which i like. but unfortunately too much cherry and too much sweet = too cloying! they should offer this in a smaller bottle. Palidor19 (1750), Brandon, Florida, USA Oct 26, 2007 its got that real black cherry astringent flavor that is well known. Everything just scream Cherry. goes down quite nice. a tad on the tart side but very drinkable. nick76 (2636), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 26, 2007 The aroma is fantastic because of the cherries. It is sweet and not the least bit tart which is what I expected. The appearance is maroon with a small head. The flavor is bitter and sweet with cherries. The palate is a bit thin. Overall this is pretty good.
