| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 6, 2007 A Mes rate: 75cl bottle from Quaffs thanks to our Terry. Very dark transluscent blood red with a thin pinky white head. Smells almost exactly like Mr. Kipling Cherry Bakewell cakes. More juice than fruit and fairly artificial but I can’t help but really like it. Some almond and marzipan in there too. Flavour is the same but a little on the sharp side. Just a faint wisp of alcohol but it’s pretty well hidden on the whole. Ridiculously sweet and tart. Entertaining but not fantastic. islay (474), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 31, 2007 12 oz. pour into a Kasteel trappist glass, on tap at Blue Nile in Minneapolis on 10-30-2007. I drank this as I awaited the release of Surly Darkness ’07. Labeled as “Kasteel Rouge.” Sharp, sour, fruit aroma: cherry (not surprisingly), raspberry, sweet red wine, cherry cough syrup. Also dessert scents: milk chocolate, cream, cherry cordial candy. Pours a translucent dark brown, a deep mahogany with a red hue. Moderate amount of light pink, frothy, fluffy, uneven head with large bubbles. Produces nice lacing. Unique and intriguing appearance. Very fruity and sour, wine-like taste. Red grape juice, cherry, cherry syrup, cherry-flavored sucking candy, cough syrup, and sugar candy flavors. Not a bad strong Belgian bruin ale underneath the cherry, but the fruit flavors almost completely overshadow the base beer. Odd but good, dry fruit aftertaste. Medium body. Somewhat oily in the palate. Lively on the tongue. I’m not a huge fruit beer guy, and make no mistake; this is a fruit beer, but Kasteel Rouge seemed to be well made, and I’m glad I tried it. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/20 | Oct 30, 2007 pours a black cherry color with a small fizzy pink head. aroma of black cherries. flavor is very sweet as expected from the makers of the sweetest beer of all time! kasteel donker of course. somewhat medicinal finish with a strange hint of raw pumpkin guts. not sour..which i like. but unfortunately too much cherry and too much sweet = too cloying! they should offer this in a smaller bottle. | 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 26, 2007 The aroma is fantastic because of the cherries. It is sweet and not the least bit tart which is what I expected. The appearance is maroon with a small head. The flavor is bitter and sweet with cherries. The palate is a bit thin. Overall this is pretty good. thenick (744), North Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 24, 2007 Tap @ Monk’s Cafe, Philadelphia. Pours a deep reddish-brown with a pinkish head. Aroma is strong cherry with a bit of almond and malt detectable (likely from the cherry pits). Taste is strong cherry, dissolving into carbonation with a bit of an alcohol aftertaste. I was surprised at the effervescence of this beer. Heavily fruit beers are not usually my bag, but this was pretty good. ElGaucho56 (390), USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 21, 2007 Sampled @ GDBTF. Pours a disturbing pink red color with pinkish foam. Very strong cherry aroma, like a jolly rancher. Thin and prickly on the palate, alcohol ends up making it taste like dimetapp. No thank you.
