Draught. Listed as "Kasteel Rouge" on the menu. Dark red-brown with a very small beige head. Aroma is dominated by cherries, with a bit of malt and a bit of acidity. Sweet cherry flavor, with some caramel, notes of wood and malt and some acidity that’s becoming more dominant in the finish. Medium to full body with a sticky mouthfeel. The alcohol is very well-hidden. Not very complex but quite nice.

The beer pours a reddish-purple color with a small white head. The aroma is unmistakable. I get a ton of cherries with nothing else. While the aroma is one dimensional, the cherries are well done. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of sweet cherries and maybe a little bit of some caramel or toffee malt. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. If you like cherries, you may like this beer. If you don’t like them, this is not the beer for you.

Pours a dark ruby red with a thin fizzy pink head. The nose was sweet, lightly tart and medicinal cherries, some vanilla and cherry pit, light earthiness, alcohol. The flavor as sweet, lightly tart and tannic, some alcohol, vanilla, fake flavor. The palate was sweet and warm.

(Bottle, 0.33 l) Poured deep red and almost clear without any head. Aroma contained strongly cherries and hint of malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were cherries and more cherries, sweetness and mild bitterness. Aftertaste contained cherries. Alcohol was very well hidden.

UPDATED: JUL 11, 2008 On tap at the Trivia Pub. Poured into a really cool looking Kasteel glassware. The surprise of the summer. Big dark red ruby color. Barely any head but there is a girdle on the inside edge of the glass. This beer looks simply pretty! Fruity tart aroma, very attractive. Taste is fantastic, tart sweet and fun. For 9%, it certainly is not overwhelming in the alky flavors department. Tho there is some alky bite but hey, how can you completely hide 9%? Nearly flat. Nice legs and lacing. Has the feel of many well made champagnes or wines I’ve tasted. Mild well controlled malt alky bite during the finish. Perhpas a little more alky than I like in this type of brew but it does not distract from the enjoyability factor. Over all simply DEE LISH. I enjoyed this so much better than the blonde. Reminds me a bit of Manescevitz cherry. Definitely the best tasting fruit beer I’ve tasted, and I have tasted a few.

Bottle: Ruby pour with a pinkish wispy head. Sweet aroma of black cherry juice, almond paste, marzipan. Slick mouthfeel. Very cherryish flavor- quite sweet. Black cherry candy, tons of marzipan sweetness, bit it’s natural and works wells as a one dimensional sweet digestive dessert.

Glad to see this one back in the MO / IL area. It is now under the name Rouge. Pours very dark crimson with a quickly diminishing pink head. The aroma had lots of cherries with a Luden’s tinge along with light spices and some sourness. Medium / full body with soft carbonation. The flavor starts with smooth sour cherries and lots of what was on the aroma. The finish is highly spiced. A good beer, but it comes across very one dimensional.

I had this on draught at Stuffed Sandwich, San Gabriel, CA. This pours a dark cherry red color with no head. The aroma is cherry, well balanced between sweet and tart. The cherry flavor dominates, and it works well. again, it's not too sweet or tart. This was an extremely enjoyable beer for a hot day.
