Kasteel Winter is a unique departure from the standard Christmas ales known for their potpourri of cinnamon and clove. In fact, it stands alone as one of the most decadent and elegant Quadruples of Belgium in its own right. This 11% ABV beer pours a Chestnut brown with an off-white head. The nose is rich, with a warming scent of Coffee, Toffee, and Dried Fruits. The mouthfeel is rich and sweet like that of melted candy. The key ingredients to this delicacy is Belgian Chocolate and Coffee...noteworthy phrases in any brewers handbook. All of these elements come together to provide an after taste reminiscent of a tootsie roll.

11.2oz bottle. Supposedly the same as their Winter Strong Ale. Clear, chestnut brown hue with a moderate, pale tan head. Huge coffee nose. Chocolate, dried dark fruits, caramel & more coffee flavor. Full-body and medium+ carbonation.

Bottled as Barista Chocolate Quad. Pours a dark mahogany with tan fizzy head. Aromas of coffee, dark fruit, and a hint of chocolate. Flavors of coffee, plums, a touch of smoke, finishes with a chocolate tail.

Espresso, walnut, charred oak, aroma, big roasty notes. Ruby black, thick quickly dissipating tan head. Rich coffee and plum notes. Medium to full body, easy carbonation. Mild walnut hints. Not a traditional quad and Iím more accustomed to tasting that much coffee in porters or styles. Iíve had coffee in other non tradtional styles that worked, but this one didnít work as well for me. Not terrible, however.

Clear dark brown red with a beige head, good carbonation. Hints of coffee, chocolate and molasses. Full bodied quad, sweet, warm, chocolate, coffee, toffee, dark fruits, molasses, vanilla, malty flavours. Warm alcohol, almost like wine. Complex, heavy beer with a fantastic, long lasting aftertaste. Near perfection!?

It seems a bit early to be drinking beers brewed for winter, but then again, this beer was bottled on 6/26/2013, so technically Iím drinking it late rather than early. I donít know if itís the age or the coffee and chocolate flavors (or some combination of the three) but this brew is innovative, hugely satisfying, and damn near perfect. The aroma and flavor point clearly toward buttery chocolate and strong coffee. Thereís some underlying notes of roasted grains, subtle dark fruits, spices, and caramel. Thereís enough booze in here to warm your stomach and lull you to sleep. This is a winter beer that could put you in a state of hibernation. I never wouldíve thought a Belgian Ale could achieve these kinds of candy-like flavors. That just shows how full of shit I am. This is a winter treat that youíll want to experience repeatedly.

Bottle from LDW drinks, Eke. Dark brown colour, beige foam. Medium carbonation. Sweet nose of chocolate. Also coffee and roasted malts. Lots of cocoa. Sweet, light bitter finish. Ok.

Roasted malts, sweet chocolate, slight coffee.

Ruby red/brown beer with a slight off-white head.

Mostly sweet deep belgian chocolate, though too much to drink through. Great to sip.

As Barista Chocolate Quad. Bottled, 15cl sample. The aroma has milk chocolate, raisin, sugar cane/toffee. Clear, dar brown-red coloured beer with a thin, off-white head. The taste is sugary sweet, has chocolate, dried fruits. Belly warming, full. Alcohol is present but not disturbing. Pretty nice desert beer actually.
