Tap at Le Trappiste. Mocha, roast, creamy, ice cream, good stuff surprisingly, but maybe not completely for me.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
New winter beer in this series, with light beige, loose, irregular head and very dark purplish brown colour. Aroma strongly reminds me of coffee powder and espresso at first, then some more impressions appear, including raisins, fondant chocolate, bark, dried leaves, candied dates, tobacco, liquorice, earth, brown rhum and vanilla. The taste is equally unusual: lots of candied cherries, even cherry ’bonbons’ at first, raisins, candi syrup, chocolate sauce and port wine sweetness, soft and thick, viscous mouthfeel, fatty even, deep caramelly maltiness, less chocolatey than expected but nevertheless thick and rich, smooth, with a hint of liquorice and increasing coffee presence in the finish, not from roasted grains as you would find in any Scotch or stout style beer, but from actually added coffee powder; the sweetness dominates and sticks to the teeth a bit, but leafy hops make for some balance. The rhum-like alcohol warms the throat and is clearly there, but somehow manages to stay gentle instead of becoming astringent. An espresso-like coffee effect stays behind in the mouth, yet subtle and agreeable. Original and well-crafted beer, clearly on a higher level of quality and creativity than its regular dark brother. I got more than I bargained for: I merely expected a spicier version of Kasteelbier Donker, but this is a totally different beer, with its own personality and indeed - as Van Honsebrouck themselves claim - a departure from the usual spiced Scotch ales that make up the majority of Belgian winter beers. Pleasantly surprised.

Crazy chocolate aroma, amazing chocolate taste. How on earth they pack 11% ABV in a beer with such a light mouth feel is a mystery. For a split second towards the end I thought I tasted cherries. Great beer.

Erős alkoholbeütés rontja az összképet. A kávé jelleg könnyen kiérezhető benne, mögötte némi csokoládé is szüremkedik. A kompozíció így jó, de egy gyengébb változatra kéne ülnie.

Pours a dark brown and clear beer with a thin off-white head. Aroma is of tootsie roll and roasted coffee. Starts off with a coffee/chocolate/tootsie roll flavor. Acidity and sweetness follows transitioning into a dry finish with lingering roast coffee. Medium-full body with low carbonation and a lingering alcohol heat.
Overall: I’m not a huge fan of coffee beers, but this one is exceptionally balanced and a great flavored winter sipping beer.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, very thin tan lacing. Very pleasing aroma of dark fruits, chocolate, and toffee. Very sweet taste, chocolate flavor comes through quite prominently. Medium body, thin texture, lively carbonation but not over-carbonated. Finishes with a nice warming sensation, and tootsie roll flavor as advertised. Very enjoyable and unique Belgian strong ale.

This is great stuff. I had it on the Kerst- en Winterbierenfestival at De Kleine Deugniet (Alkmaar, NL) and it was the revelation of that festival. Coffee, caramel, chocolate. "Haagse Hopjes", for the Dutch readers. Perfect beer for winter evenings.
