Kasteel Winter is a unique departure from the standard Christmas ales known for their potpourri of cinnamon and clove. In fact, it stands alone as one of the most decadent and elegant Quadruples of Belgium in its own right. This 11% ABV beer pours a Chestnut brown with an off-white head. The nose is rich, with a warming scent of Coffee, Toffee, and Dried Fruits. The mouthfeel is rich and sweet like that of melted candy. The key ingredients to this delicacy is Belgian Chocolate and Coffee...noteworthy phrases in any brewers handbook. All of these elements come together to provide an after taste reminiscent of a tootsie roll.

Draft at De Paas. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Big cocoa and dark chocolate hit to the aroma up front with strong Belgian ale dark fruits, yeast, caramel, dried fruits and sweet malts coming up the slightly boozy rear. Flavour is heavy sweet with that massive sticky sweet thick cocoa palate. Full bodied with soft carbonation. A decent winter warmer but wouldn’t want more than one glass in a sitting.

Bottle from Dranken Verheyen in Poppel. The beer has a dark ruby red color and a fast disappearing cream colored head. The aroma is fruity with tones of dried fruits. Further a bitterness is noticable with tones of dark chocolate, coffee, caramel and candice. The taste is full and sweet, with tones of caramel and some dark and dried fruits, to change into a light bitterness with tones of cacao, coffee and dark chocolate. The finish is full and with warming alcohol. Lovely and nice winter beer, completely different from the other Kasteel beers. I loved it.

Almost opaque dark brown beer, small bubbly tan head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Sweet malts, light floralness. Toffee streak and something vaguely like cheap chocolate. Little spice. Light semi dry finish brings mild marmite. Lots of flavour here but I could not drink much of this, gets chewy.

Poured deep dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of sweet cocoa and soft coffee. Full body, flavour as the aroma, lightly roasted. Hides the ABV pretty well.

Poured dark amber with a small off white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, dark fruit and chocolate, coffee. Full body, quite boozy, flavour is as the aroma, some light spices hidden in the background, nice plum and date tones in it.

A good winter beer. Pours a deep muddy brown with a tan head. Smells of herbs and hazelnuts, maybe a bit of anise. Taste has lots of hazelnut, vanilla, anise and banana, with a slight soapy aftertaste. Had in the bottle.

0.33l bottle. Clear dark brown color with browny head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel and mostly coffee. Taste is really hard to get because alcohol is dominating. Even though alcohol can be strongly felt, it is not offensive. Very nice beer.

APPEARANCE - 1-finger head that dissipates. Dark, opaque, foamy. Some lacing. AROMA/SCENT - Malts, coffee, sweet. TASTE - Sweet, coffee, chocolate, caramel. MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Some carbonation. Smooth, creamy, warming. VALUE - 8-oz. draft for $9. Why be so skimpy with your portions? OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - Like drinking a Chocolate Yoo-Hoo Belgian Tripel. Nice, but gimmicky beer like Evil Twin.

Tap at Le Trappiste. Mocha, roast, creamy, ice cream, good stuff surprisingly, but maybe not completely for me.
