An unequalled beer, at the top of the Kasteel spectrum. The aroma and flavour of Cuvée are those of a Kasteel Donker, that aged 10 years in the cellars of the castle, noble and strong.

Bottle vintage 2010. Pours a dark mahogany color with a thin tan head. Aromas of sweet molasses and dark pitted fruit. Flavor is quite sweet up front, but rich with notes of oak and molasses and a fair amount of alcohol. A good sipper.

Maker: Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck, Ingelmunster, Belgium *** Beer: Kasteel Cuvée de Chateau (bottled, unfiltered, 330ml) *** Style: Belgian Strong Ale *** ALC.VOL.: 11.0% *** "An unequalled beer, at the top of the Kasteel spectrum. The aroma and flavour of Cuvée are those of a Kasteel Donker, that aged 10 years in the cellars of the castle, noble and strong." [brewery notes] *** Colour: Dark mahogany, barely translucent. Medium, creamy beige head. *** Nose: Yeast; dark sour berries. *** Texture: Medium to full body, not really oily though. Active carbonation. *** Taste: Licorice, dark fruit, estery notes, a bit of wood. Less sour than the aroma (There is sugar in this beer!). Alcohol is present, but less cloyingly so than the massive ABV would suggest. Licorice still strong in the middle, but less sweet. A vanilla note is there, too. More of the same in the finish, aftertaste has a bit of dark cocoa and sour fruit. *** Impressions: When I ordered this beer I didn’t realize it was 11% ABV (If I had, I wouldn’t have ordered it). Still, this is a powerful, if not terribly complex beer with nice licorice and dark sour fruit flavours. But not a beer one would drink every day, or year.

330 ml bottle from Club de Cervezas as Kasteel Cuvée du Chateau. Pours a murky brown color with redish hues and a medium grayish-tan head that diminishes slowly leaving a nice lacing. Aroma is really enticing with those dark fruits: prunes, plums, dates, raisins, black currants. A second layers with dense nutty notes adds complexity: chestnuts, nougat, toffee and caramel. Not so different from the Kasteel Donker although clearly more "nutty". Taste is also more "nutty", sweet but not cloying, plentiful with dark fruit flavors and alcoholic punch. This does not taste too diferent from an Amarula liquor, for example. Bold, but it feels boozier and slightly less colorful than the Donker. Big body, heavy and creamy. Slight fizziness in the tongue. Woody aftertaste. Overall, this is a fine dark Belgian Strong Ale but it doesn’t feel like the treasure it was supposed to be.

Flaska från Beernavigator. 2012 vintage.

Dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is woody slightly alcohol and notes of dark fruits. Taste is like aroma but a little bit more sweet, hints of plum, roasted malt and alcohol again. Low carbonation and full body with a dry sweet flavor.

Pours dark with medium head, aroma is very strong and resembles yeast, pungent dark character, malt. Taste is very carbonated with a sweet taste which is followed by a soir feeling leavinf yoir mouth. A good Belgium specimen.

This is really excellent - just my style of beer. Lots of floral yeast aroma here with some coriander and tangerine. A hint of passion fruit. Light booze. Pours murky brown with decent head. Soft carbonation, sweet finish. Bottle.

Weinig smaak, bier valt enorm zwaar en na een half glas ben je er eigenlijk al klaar mee. Donker bier. Smaakt licht rokerig/koffie.

Bottle(.75l): Deep ruby-amber coloured, presumably clear, small off-white foamy layer; caramel, dried sweet cherries with nutty traces and slight traces of alcohol; moderate sweet(cake-like) flavour, nearly full bodied; lingering sweet caramelly-fruity finish, well hidden alcohol included. Not too exciting…
