4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 5/29/2013. Pours clear very dark brown color with a 1 finger dense tan head with decent retention, that reduces to a spotty cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge raisin, prune, date, red grape, cherry, molasses, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, clove, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Outstanding aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, red grape, date, cherry, molasses, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, pepper, clove, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, prune, red grape, date, cherry, molasses, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, pepper, clove, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with a small-moderate warming lingering after the finish; but not boozy at all. Overall this is an outstanding quadrupel style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle 330ml. Clear deep amber with medium beige head, quite fizzy. Sweetish aroma with notes of milk chocolate and caramel, yeasty, faint notes of salted fish. Sweet flavor with notes of caramel and prune, slightly salty, notes of black pepper, very boozy, spicy sticky finish. Lively carbonation, medium to full-bodied. Quite hard to drink.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Beautiful black beer. Almost no foam, and little carbonation. However, this compliments the softness of the beer. The beer has a nice soft sweetness that is very pleasant in your mouth. The finish is nice, not long and not short. The glas it was served in completes the sensation. It looked like a wineglass, but it was a special Cuvée du Chateau glass.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Black transparent beer, weak head, light carbonation.
Smell is banana, coriander (almost like a weisen??) mixed with caramel and a touch of alcohol.
Taste is sweet bitter sour. Alcohol dominates too much. It kills the taste and the balance. Raisins, some hoppiness, but it all degenerates into sour alcohol.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
tubby 11.2 oz bottle picked up at Brewer’s Haven.. Bottled on 5/29/13... Enjoyed about 21 months later from a large bulb goblet.. 1 finger head rises up and dies back pretty quickly leaving no lacing and no real cap.. the brew is deep dark walnut.
Thick malty nose leans heavily on the dark raisins.. boozy with warmth, burns the eyes a bit.. Spicy yeasty phenols make me think clove first and pepper second.. Esters are raisin with dark cherries.. a bit of oxidation.
Flavor is hot and a little thin, the beer drops off the tongue quickly.. leaving fizzy raisin alcohol.. Okay.. The carbonation scrubs the flavor very fast, but if you try, there is some fruity esters and plenty of spicy phenols..
Very burpy.. Sharp alcohol... Seems a pretty big mess at this point IMO.
