3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Scrapersnbeer (461) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 14, 2012
A beer made with me in mind. Big nose of currants, toffee, licorice and alcohol. Very murky, swampy looking brown. Lots of dark tree fruit flavors and bitter contrast that’s based on the high content more than hops. Very thick yet slick, also tears the palate up pretty well. As always, I don’t like to criticize beers for relying to much on the alcohol content, but that seems to be dominant element in this one. The point is, a beer as high toned as this needs to go up in nuance or down in price. I won’t kick it out of bed, though.

Pours dark amber in color with an off-white head. The aroma is a bit off-putting and cough medicine-like. Overly sweet with some cherry flavor and syrup. The flavor is no better (worse, perhaps?). Cherry cough syrup flavor with cloying sweetness. Lots of dark, overripe fruit flavors such as plums and prunes. Not my favorite by a long shot.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 MrW (72) - Londerzeel, BELGIUM - APR 30, 2012
Bottle @ZDF ’12
Karamel, wine aroma with some fruits.
Brownred colour but very dark.
The caramel of the aroma comes back in the taste and so do the fruits. Some alcohol in the finish, together with a light sweetness.

Draughht. High creamy lasting off-white head. Pitch black body. Mailty coffee liquorice aroma. Mild creamy malt coffee liquorice flavor with a low carbonation and a long aftertaste. Alcohol level well hidden.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 benpickens (303) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - APR 27, 2012
Inky brown; very little head and fades into non existence even with a vigourous pour. Grape aroma; pleasant similar to Abt 12 and Roch 10. Nice sweet taste and finish with an undercurrent of fiery contained alcohol burn.

Bottle at Volo, served way too cold. So much better as it warmed with grapey aroma and winish rich, dark bodied. A good barleywine, and real wine substitute. Alcohol well hidden. Almost no head.Above average mouthfeel.
