An unequalled beer, at the top of the Kasteel spectrum. The aroma and flavour of Cuvée are those of a Kasteel Donker, that aged 10 years in the cellars of the castle, noble and strong.

Enjoyed from a 750ml champagne-style bottle in a stemless wine glass. The beer pours a medium to nearly deep brown, with a low light tan head. The nose shows fairly rich aromas of molasses and raisin. An underlying yeast note comes through, reminiscent of Duvel’s strain, as does an interesting subtle lactic note. The palate shows assertive carbonation up front, before more molasses/toffee, assertive bitterness (perhaps from the alcohol?), and a note of alcohol toward the finish. Again, underlying yeast notes come through, adding an almost cooling tropical fruit ester toward the finish of the beer. The finish lingers for a moment, showing slight alcohol and residual sweetness. Overall, a strong dark that moves away from the norm with underlying lactic character, but in a way that shows complexity, finesse, and restraint, rather than a simple desire for uniqueness for the sake of itself.

F: nice very pale brown. C: very dark red amber brown. A: very malty, dark caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, hint of bread. T: nice sweet cherry, dark chocolate, with merlot wine taste, alcohol, roasted malt, quite dry for me, some spicy, some like metallic dusty sourness, medium to full body, nice lively carbonation, interesting and worth to try.

Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake Taniguchi). 2012 vintage. Roast malt nose, with deep dark fruitiness, some oxidation and phenolic notes. Boozy dark fruit initial flavors, raisin, prunes, and brandy-like notes. Medium body, some alcohol burn. Very tasty and rich, but a bit thin-bodied for a quad. Very warming.

Bottle from Magic Room. Vanilla and esters both in aroma and taste. Definite Belgian spicy funky element. Defined by the yeast. Clear very dark colour. Alcohol dangerously hidden. Good one.
