3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Enjoyed from a 750ml champagne-style bottle in a stemless wine glass. The beer pours a medium to nearly deep brown, with a low light tan head. The nose shows fairly rich aromas of molasses and raisin. An underlying yeast note comes through, reminiscent of Duvel’s strain, as does an interesting subtle lactic note. The palate shows assertive carbonation up front, before more molasses/toffee, assertive bitterness (perhaps from the alcohol?), and a note of alcohol toward the finish. Again, underlying yeast notes come through, adding an almost cooling tropical fruit ester toward the finish of the beer. The finish lingers for a moment, showing slight alcohol and residual sweetness. Overall, a strong dark that moves away from the norm with underlying lactic character, but in a way that shows complexity, finesse, and restraint, rather than a simple desire for uniqueness for the sake of itself.

Zwaar donker bier met lichtbruine schuimkraag die niet lang blijft. Robuust en vol van smaak met zeer lekkere, warme afdronk. Smaken van chocola, mout, toffee en koffie. Een van de betere kasteelbieren !!

Dark Brown beer with a small freak head. Syrup and caramel in the aroma. Coffee and caramel in the taste with a slightly sweet turning to bitter aftertaste. Nice beer to enjoy on a lazy afternoon. Beware of the alcohol petcentage, you don’t taste it, but its 11%!

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
33cl bottle @ home. Dark reddish-brown color, minimal brownish head. Smells wine, caramel, biscuit and syrup notes. Flavor is slightly roasty, cereal notes, caramel again, dark fruits and raisin dominates. Alcohol is present but not disturbing. Taste medium sweet, lightly bitter, light to medium sour, salty notes. Full body, sticky texture, average carbonation, sourish-bittersweet finish with champagne feel. Not as sweet as Kasteel Donker but sour taste appearances instead. Not bad but not really my style.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330 ml "2012" vintage bottle bought at Craftissmo in Tsim Sha Tsui East.
Looks: Translucent deep amber brown colour with zero yeast sediments; Near zero head and residual soapy beige foam which lasts for 10 seconds; Moderate sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.
Aroma: Fragrant sweet malt, with strong raisins, figs, red cherry, Port wine, sugar, fairly light banana and vanilla, bubblegum and very light spice.
Taste: Strong sweet malt, with potent alcohol, strong plum, raisins, dark fruits, dry cranberry, cherry liquor, sugar, hint of chocolate, light spices, lime, light grass and light bitter hops.
Body: Light, Thin but slick palate.
Mouth Feel: Strong, dry but pleasant alcohol dominates, followed closely with strong plum, raisins, dry dark fruits, dry cranberries, cherry liquor. Sugar taste is subdued and blended well within the taste. Spice and chocolate come as very light touch. Quite nice.
Booze: More potent feel than that of Kasteel Donker. Not screaming, less sugary and quite pleasant. Well done!
Hoppiness: No aroma. Light spice, good lime and light grassy taste. Bitterness is light but notable for a sweet-bitter semi finish.
After Taste: Wet. Boozy and warm to mouth.
Comments: I suppose this is what may happen to an aged Kasteel Donker. If this is so, then the result is a mixed bag: no head to speak of, thin out body good vintage-like aroma, strong dry dark fruits and nice boozy taste, and quite comfy and warm palate. As a simulation exercise, it gets high marks. For sheer enjoyment, though, I think the Donker is better. Recommendable nevertheless.
