A strong Belgian brown ale.
After extensive tasting, trying to fulfil increasingly strict requirements, the brewmaster obtains a creamy, dark Belgian brown ale: Kasteelbier. The quality of the past is still unmatched and the beloved taste is very much of the present. Kasteelbier is a dark, artisanal beer, soft and mild, full and creamy. It can age for many, many years, as indicated on the bottle. 11% abv, serve at 12°C (54°F) (Translation by Martinus)

Fizzy deep reddish brown. Head disintegrates fairly rapidly. Clear. Aroma is brown sugar, raisins, grape. Zippy esters, mild spicy funk. Taste is syrupy sweet - straight up brown sugar. Alcohol doesn’t burn, but is there. Taste of dates. Some mild bitterness on the finish, not much in the way of hops. Probably would benefit from some aging to soften the edges of the sweetness. Or some extra funk, or even a hint of sourness. Very bubbly. Syrupy.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2016 Donkerrood amberkleurig. Plakkerige afdronk... Weinig bitter. Een bier om mee af te sluiten. Lijkt me trouwens een Quadrupel dit.

Bottle from Real ale, Newark. Deep colour black colour with no head. Sweet caramel aroma and taste that just dominates anything else. Thin body.

0.3l bottle. Very arousing aroma of fruity ale, sweetnes strikes early on the tongue. Aftertaste is cold and abprupt, moderate carbs.

Bottle. Dark brown, beige head quickly fading. Sweet aromas and very sweet taste, doesn’t stick in the throat though. Would make a great substitute for a dessert wine. (In a good way).

0.33 l bottle from local AH, best before July 2020. Clear, very dark red with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, brown sugar, hints of raisins and alcohol. Sweet-malty taste of caramel, brown sugar, licorice and hints of raisins, followed by medium long, moderately bitter, slightly warming and a little alcoholic finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very sweet and not very sophisticated in its flavours, but rather monotonous. The brewery should at least bring back bottle conditioning and increase its aging potential. Only mediocre for me.
