radiomgb (1920), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Mar 30, 2005 Bottle. Dark brown in colour. Aroma of figs, raisins, prunes and dark chocolate malts. Assertive alcohol up-front, then some light chocolate malt, dark fruits and some spices. Slightly sweet medium body, high carbonation. Finishes with a long alcohol burn. This needs some time to age. Sigmund (2197), Hafrsfjord, Norway Mar 30, 2005 33 cl bottle (as Kasteel Bier Bruin), at Les Moules Belgian restaurant in Prague. Served too cold. Beautiful deep brown to ruby colour. Large head which disappears rapidly. Aroma of dark malts, oak, old sherry, spices and leather. Flavour is very malty and sweet with a warming mouthfeel, elements of Christmas spices and old sherry. Very good. Yummy! DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 28, 2005 Thanks to tiggmtl for this one. Pours deep ruby with medium, off-white head. Aroma of malt, cabernet, toffee. Tastes very red winey with brown sugar, fruit, port. This one reminds me a little of Westy 12. Solid complexity and balance, and just delicious. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Mar 12, 2005 Dark brown colour with a off white head. Sweet fruity nose with yeasty hints. Sweet yeasty flavor with licorice. JohnBarleycorn (390), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 5, 2005 Dark, dark brown with very little see-through. Almost impossible to coax a head out of this beer, and what little foam does form quickly vanishes. Not much to sniff at: some molasses, some strawberry, but disappointing given the nature of this extra-strong brew. Very nice, smooth, creamy palate. You can feel the weight behind this beer, especially as it warms up, but it still seems quite innocent given its 11% alc./vol. Not much in the flavour profile aside from the heady alcohol, residual sweetness and maybe a touch of berry fruit. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA Mar 4, 2005 Malty beauty with fruits and nuts in the palate. nice portlike body and vanilla praline character. big bread and biscuit body. very nice beer. WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 18, 2005 When I first tasted this I thought "Belgian Strong Brown Ale." Looks like the brewer thought that said it all. Dark brown, with ruby notes when you hold it up to strong light. No head at all. Full mouth, almost syrupy. Big taste of malt, chocolate, toffee. Long sweet and sour finish. I would have liked it more if the heat of the alcohol were hidden somewhat. ante (2904), Stockholm, Sweden Feb 18, 2005 Updated: Feb 19, 2006(Sampled draught at Akkurat, Stockholm) Dark ruby brown, creamy tan haed. Sweet aroma of caramel, belgian chocolate, candied nuts and dark syrup. Full flavour of syrupm burnt sugar, almond and candied oranges. Thick mouthfeel. Long syrupy sweet finish.
