Little to know carbonation in this 750ml. Slightly sweet...just enough to balance the alcohol. An enjoyable and quite smooth brew.

Cork dated 03/99. Familiar combination of port-wine, chocolate and raisiny, pruny aroma and flavor w. a hint of oak, perhaps. Also noted a hint of cocoanut? Sugary sweet w. an alcohol burn. Pours w. a small head, opaque mahogany color. Good dessert style beer to sip - too sweet to drink much.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 6, 2002
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2007 (Aged 5 years) A marriage of chocolatey prunes and minty herbs...Nobility are in attendance : port wine, coffee, and caramel...And they lived happily ever after... 3.7/5
(Aged 1 year or less): Free alcohol reigns supreme and drunkenness soon demonstrates the inherent discord between a few guests...It seems that the port wine doesn’t like the sweet, dark chocolate that much, the grapes grab the booze and don’t share with the toffee family, and the prunes lose coherence a bit too soon in the evening...3.3/5 This one is a very good example of a beer that must be aged...Rating is an average of both experiences...
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 caesar (3748) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - JUN 28, 2002
The Brune of the Kasteelbier series is definitely much better than the gouden triple or whatever it is called. The sweetness and the malts make this beer more balanced indeed, but still the ABV is extraordinary high, and cannot be masked by its taste.
3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Aurelius (3147) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - MAY 19, 2002
Ouch! Overindulged on this one. The ABV is masked by the sweet, as bierkoning mentioned. Raisin-y, sweet. Acidic and has plenty of kick.

Toothachingly sweet. There are good and interesting flavors there, leather, oak and others. But the finish is mouth numbingly sweet, so much so that I couldn’t finish it.
3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Bakka (16) - Paris, FRANCE - APR 28, 2002
Deep brown color.
A very sweet beer, which makes it hard to drink much of it, but the taste is excellent.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 ravidesai (916) - Bombay, INDIA - APR 25, 2002
dark woody brown colour, thin beige head. aroma of brown sugar, dark malt, burned plum. smooth body like a good souffle.
the taste holds up to its aroma and hides the alcohol well. A must for fans of dark belians and anyone with a sweet tooth

What an interesting beer!! Crystal clear deep red brown colour. Quickly dissipating light red-brown head. The aroma is tantalizing, a combination of tropical fruit cocktail, gooseberries and a smoked wood and burnt sugar. Palate is all in the front of the mouth with only faint bitter-sour components. Smooth, soft yeasty body ,and unfortunately a rather weak sweet finish. The alcohol is well covered up. Can’t imagine drinking more than one at any sitting.

Bitter chocolate smell. Mahogany colour, tiny cappuccino head. Tastes of molasses and liquorice. Sweet yes, but I’ve a sweet tooth. Warming, strong but very enjoyable. Exellent!
